SUMMARY

The Softimage 3D tablet drivers on the 3D, Eddie, and Toonz CD-ROMs support all Wacom and Hitachi tablets. In general, these drivers work with the current and previous version of the Softimage 3D software. You must use the platform and operating system versions that the Softimage 3D software specifies.

Troubleshooting Steps

Perform the following steps to confirm that the files that you use to run your tablet are set-up correctly:

  1. Check to see which port your tablet cable is connected to.

  2. Make sure t1 (if you are connected to port 1) or t2 (for port 2) in /etc/inittab is set to "off" and the correct port number is indicated at the end of the line.

  3. Verify that the permissions are set correctly for the port you are using:

ls -al /dev/ttyd1 (permissions should be rw- for all)

  4. Verify that a binary driver ".o" file (for example, wacom.o) was created in /var/sysgen/boot. If not, you must rerun the tablet install program.

  5. There should be no more than one ".o" file in /var/sysgen/boot using the port that your Softimage 3D driver uses. You can check your documentation (Reference manual or the Readme file in the tablet directory of your CD-ROM) to confirm the file name that the tablet install program creates. If another ".o" file exists in /var/sysgen/boot, you must:

    a. Rename it by changing the extension so that it is not referenced by

          the driver.

    b. Reset one of the drivers to the other available port.

    c. Delete it if it is not referenced by another software program.

  6. You must have a Wacom file in /usr/lib/X11/input/config. If not, reinstall the driver.

  7. Ensure that the line "USE : wacom" has been added to /var/sysgen/system/gfx.sm. If not, add it at the bottom of the file.

  8. Check if /dev/ttyd1 (or /dev/ttyd2) is linked to /dev/input/wacom (optional).

  9. Confirm that the dip switches on the tablet are set properly.

  10. Confirm that all software-specific variables are entered properly

        (see below).

        Software Specific Drivers

EDDIE setenv EDDIETABLET <driver_name> in .eddie

        TOONZ (none)

        3D setenv SI_WACOM /dev/ttyd<port_number> in .softimage

  11. Verify that your cable is the right type (not Macintosh) and

        functional.

  12. Remember to power up your tablet before turning on your SGI.

If, after following these steps, your tablet is still not running, you may want to use a tablet installation program from another Softimage 3D (3D, Eddie, and Toonz) CD-ROM that you have previously (and successfully) used, or obtain a driver directly from Wacom [(360)750-8882; (800)922-9348; www.wacom.com].

How To Configure Your Tablet

Depending on your driver, the configuration settings for your tablet are in "wacom", or "tablet" in /usr/lib/X11/input/config/usr/lib/X11/input/config. Documentation on the variables is in the Readme file in this directory. Changes to any variables are not activated until you log in again.
