Logon Error to NetWare Virtual Directories

Article ID: Q156407

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Information Server version 2.0

SYMPTOMS

When you set up Internet Information Server (IIS) with a virtual directory to a Novell NetWare server, you may get the following error message:

Logon failure: unknown user or password.

CAUSE

IIS uses the username and password in the virtual directory configuration dialog to connect to the NetWare server. Internet Information Server assumes this account is valid on both the NetWare server and a valid account on the Microsoft Windows NT server.

RESOLUTION

Use the User Manager for Domains program to ensure that the account used to access the NetWare server is valid on both the NetWare server and in the Windows NT domain/local database. If the account is a domain user, then use the <domain name>\<username> nomenclature when you type the user name.
