Java Program Incorrectly Displays Document in New Window

Last reviewed: January 14, 1997
Article ID: Q155204
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0 for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When you load a Web page that contains a Java program in Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0 for Windows 95, the Java program typically runs in a new instance of Internet Explorer. As you navigate in the second instance of Internet Explorer, additional Web pages may be loaded in new instances of Internet Explorer. This behavior may occur when the Java program is intended to load the additional Web pages in the same instance of Internet Explorer instead of in new instances.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when a Java program attempts to display a Web page in the top-level frame of the same window in which the Java program is running.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0 for Windows 95. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

When you load a Web page that contains a Java program, the Java program runs in a new instance of Internet Explorer by default. The Java program can then use the ShowDocument method to display a Web page or other document associated with a Universal Resource Locator (URL) address.

When the ShowDocument method is used, a document can be displayed in the same window in which the Java program is running, or it can be displayed in a different window. If you want the document to be displayed in the same window, you can also specify whether you want the document to appear in the Java program's frame, the parent frame of the Java program's frame, or the top-level frame of the Java program's window.

If you specify that you want the document to appear in the top-level frame of the Java program's window, it may appear in a different window instead, causing the problem described in this article to occur.
