Article ID: Q154852
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a

SYMPTOMS

When delete a row or column to which a formula refers, and then click Undo Delete on the Edit menu, the formulas in the filled range are altered.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when all of the following conditions are met:

  • You insert a formula that performs a calculation based on data in a cell in a row or column in the worksheet.

    -and-

  • The formula you insert uses relative references and contains at least one operator, for example, a plus (+) sign.

    -and-

  • You fill the formula down or across a range of cells.

    -and-

  • You delete the first row or column in the worksheet and all the rows or columns to which the formulas refer.

    -and-

  • You click Undo Delete on the Edit menu after you delete the row or column.

NOTE: This problem does not occur if you delete a specific range of cells in the row or column.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Delete a range of cells instead of the entire row or column.

Method 2: Copy and paste the formulas into each cell instead of using the

Fill command to insert the formulas.

Method 3: Type the formula into each cell instead of using the Fill command
          to insert the formulas.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
