Web Directory and NetMeeting Home Page Options Not Functional

Last reviewed: August 26, 1997
Article ID: Q154565
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft NetMeeting version 1.0 for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

The Web Directory and NetMeeting Home Page toolbar buttons and menu commands are unavailable or unresponsive.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if any of the following conditions exist:

  • Your default Internet browser has not registered itself properly with Windows 95.

    -or-

  • Your default Internet browser does not support the required Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) shell extension.

NOTE: The HTTP shell extension allows you to access a Web page by typing an HTTP address on the Run command line available on the Windows 95 Start menu.

RESOLUTION

Install an Internet browser (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.0 or later) that registers itself properly and supports the HTTP shell extension.

If your Internet browser registers itself properly with Windows 95 but does not support the shell extension, installing Internet Explorer should allow your browser to support this extension.

MORE INFORMATION

Some browsers that do not register themselves properly cause the Web Directory and NetMeeting Home Page buttons and menu commands to be unavailable.

If you are using a browser that does not natively support the required HTTP shell extension, you can install Internet Explorer, which adds this functionality. Keeping your original browser as the default allows you to use the Web Directory and NetMeeting Home Page options.
