The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server, version 4.0

In some cases it may be necessary to access the Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Connector (IMC) Queues that are located within the Microsoft Exchange Message Store. The following steps outline the process for accessing the queues and how to delete mail from this queue using the Microsoft Exchange MDB Viewer Utility.

  1. Login to the server running the IMC as the service account. Run Regedt32exe and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\
                  CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles.

2. You will find a profile called "MSExchangeIMC xxxxxxxxxx". Select the
profile name key and choose the Registry Save Key menu and save the
   entry to disk.
3. Add a key under Profiles and name it something descriptive such as "IMC
Profile". Select that profile key just created and choose Registry
Restore and select the file created in step #2.

You now have a MAPI profile that can be used by any MAPI client.

The MDB Viewer utility is a MAPI client that will give you full access to the MTS-IN and MTS-OUT directories. This is located on the Standard or Enterprise addition of Microsoft Exchange Server and is located in the \Support\Utils\I386 directory. The executable file is called Mdbvu32.exe and can be run directly from the CD-ROM.

The Following steps outline the process of using MDB Viewer to access the MTS-IN and MTS-OUT queues and delete a message. In some cases, you may need to reboot the server before MDB View can access the newly created IMC profile.

  1. Start MDB View and choose the "IMC profile" you created in the prior steps. Choose MDB menu and select the Open Message Store option. From the Store Display Name pane select the "Internet Mail Connector (Server)" display name and select the Open button.
2. Choose the MDB menu and select the Open Root Folder. You will now see
the MTS-IN and MTS-OUT folders on the Child folders Window. Select the
MTS-OUT or MTS-IN Child Folder pane and in the Messages In Folder pane
you will see any messages that exist in that queue.
3. To delete a message select the message you want to delete from the
Message In Folder pane. In the Operations Available drop-down dialog
select the "lpFLD->DeleteMessages()" function. Select the Call Function
button and confirm the delete by selecting the OK button. The message
   should now be deleted.
