SYMPTOMS
========

When you start Money, you may receive one or more instances of the following
error message:

   The file you attempted to import appears to be invalid or contains corrupt
   data. Please download the file again. If this problem continues, contact your
   financial institution.

NOTE: You may receive this error message even though your Money data file is not
damaged.

CAUSE
=====

This behavior can occur if you link your Money Investment Accounts with MSN
Investor and you delete any of the temporary files (.tmp) created by Quote Write
Back (QWB).

QWB stores updated prices from Investor in temporary files located in the Temp
folder on your hard disk. When you start Money, the updated prices are entered
into your Money data files.

References to the QWB temporary files are stored in the Microsoft Windows
registry. If the QWB files are deleted, Money displays the error message listed
in the "Symptoms" section of this article.

RESOLUTION
==========

To prevent this issue from occurring in the future, always start Money before
you delete temporary files from the Temp folder. After you start Money and the
QWB data is entered into your Money data files, you can delete the temporary
files.

If you have received the error message, click OK to close each error message
dialog box.

If you track numerous investments and you have had Investor open for a long
period of time, you may have received too many error messages to be able to
close them all. If this is the case, download and run the Fixqwb.exe file. The
Fixqwb.exe file removes the QWB entries in the Windows registry.

The Fixqwb.exe file is available as a free download from the following Microsoft
Web site:

   http://support.microsoft.com/download/support/mslfiles/fixqwb.exe

After you download the Fixqwb.exe file, double-click the file, and then click OK.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at
the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION
================

How Quote Write Back (QWB) Works
--------------------------------

When you link a Money file to your Investor portfolio, QWB is enabled. When QWB
is enabled, it creates a new temporary file in the Temp folder on your hard disk
every time it updates prices. The number of temporary files created by QWB
depends on the frequency that QWB updates prices and the length of time you have
had Investor open.

These QWB temporary files are named ~of<####>.tmp where <####> can be
any combination of digits.

After QWB creates a temporary file, it creates a pointer to the file in the
Windows registry.

When you start Money, the updated prices are entered in your Money data file.
After the data is entered, Money deletes the temporary files and the registry
entries that point to the files.
