Summary:

To avoid the message "Not a Valid Word Document" when performing a
print merge, make sure the following conditions are met:

1. The DATA statement must correspond exactly to the filename of the
   data document.

2. The data file must be a one-word name (no spaces). Word may mistake
the first word of the filename for a header document. Header
documents are explained on page 214 of the "Reference to Microsoft
   Word" version 1.0 manual.

3. Both the form letter and the data file must be saved in the same
   folder.

If the above procedure does not correct the problem, save the data
document as text only with a simple one-word filename.

This error message will also appear when printing a document to a
letter-quality printer if Word cannot find the letter-quality printer
driver or if the driver is damaged. The letter-quality printer driver
must be on the desktop next to the Word program.
