The information in this article applies to:
 
 - Microsoft Windows Update, used with:
    - Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 for Windows 98

SYMPTOMS
========
 
When you attempt to connect to the Microsoft Windows Update site, you may
receive the following error message:
 
   Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll at 0177:BFF9D709
 
CAUSE
=====
 
This behavior can occur if the WuRedirInfoB Class file in the Downloaded Program
Files folder is damaged.
 
RESOLUTION
==========
 
To resolve this issue, remove the damaged WuRedirInfoB Class file and then
connect to the Windows Update site to download a new copy of the file. To do so,
use the following steps:
 
1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click
   Internet.
 
2. On the General tab, click Settings, and then click View Objects.
 
3. Right-click WuRedirInfoB Class, and then click Remove.
 
4. Restart your computer, and then connect to the Windows Update Site.
   (windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
 
5. Click the Product Update Link. Make the selection (Yes) for Windows Update to
   check the components installed on your computer.
 
6. If you are prompted to install Active Setup, click YES. (the WuRedirInfoB
   Class file is downloaded at this time)
 
Please Note:
You may not be prompted to install Active Setup at that time. However, when you
are prompted please install.
 
If this does not reinstall the WuRedirInfoB file, please follow these steps:
 
1. Right-click My Computer.
 
2. Double-click the primary hard drive (ususally C:).
 
3. Double-click the Windows folder.
 
4. Double-click the System folder.
 
5. Right-click the wuredirb.dll file and then click Delete.
 
6. Click Yes to remove this file.
 
7. Restart the computer.
 
8. Visit the Windows Update Site and click Product Updates.
 
9. Click Yes to determine installed components.
 
The WuRedirInfoB file should be replaced at this time.
 
IF THE PREVIOUS STEPS DO NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE:

Download the newest version of the Microsoft Virtual Machine. To do
so, please follow the steps below:
 
1. Please access: http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm31.htm
 
2. You will see an End User License Agreement(EULA)near the end of the page.
   Please click the first "I accept:.." listed after the EULA. At the next
   screen you will see "Microsoft Virtual Machine for Microsoft Windows 95,98,
   and NT 4.0 on x89 Architectures" as the heading.
 
3. Please click the file name listed to the far right from the site closest to
   you to download the MSJAVX86.exe.
 
4. When prompted, save the file to your hard drive.
 
5. Double-click the downloaded file on your hard disk.
 
6. You will need to restart your computer once the file is installed.
