SYMPTOMS
========
 
When you attempt to open or restore an Investor data file in Portfolio
Manager, you may experience one of the following symptoms:
 
 - You receive the following error message:
 
      There are no online accounts to update.
 
 - Your browser stops responding (hangs).
 
 - Your portfolio password is not recognized.
 
CAUSE
=====
 
This behavior can occur if the Invsec.ini security file associated with
the Investor data file is missing or damaged.
 
RESOLUTION
==========
 
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
 
1. Disconnect from the Internet, shut down the computer, and then restart
   the computer.
 
2. Start your Web browser, and then visit the following MSN Web site:
 
      http://investor.msn.com
 
   If you are prompted to download the controls, do so.
 
3. Make sure Portfolio Manager version 6.1998.1119.1 or later is installed
   on your computer. To do this, click About Portfolio Manager on the Help
   menu. Check the version number, and then click OK.

4. Double-click an account in your portfolio that is linked to an online
   broker.
 
5. Click to clear the Linked To Online Broker check box, and then click OK.
 
6. Repeat steps 4-5 for each account that is linked to an online broker.
 
7. On the toolbar in your Web browser, click Refresh or Reload.
 
8. Double-click one of your accounts that you want to link to an online
   broker.
 
9. Click to select the Linked To Online Broker check box, and then click
   OK. Create a new portfolio password if you are prompted to do so.
 
   NOTE: Your Investor portfolio password is not linked in any way to
   your broker passwords or your Investor subscription password.

10. Follow the instructions on the screen to link the account to an online
   broker.
 
   NOTE: You need to know the name of your broker, your broker user ID and
   password, and the name of the account. If you have more than one account
   with a specific broker, click only the account that you want to link to
   your Investor portfolio.
 
11. Repeat steps 8-10 for each account you want to link to a broker.
 
If the issue continues to occur, follow these steps to restore the Inv5.ini
data file:
 
NOTE: Microsoft recommends that you make a backup copy of your existing
Investor data file before you restore an older data file. For information
about how to back up Investor data, please see the following article in
the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

1. On the File menu in Portfolio Manager, click Restore Backup.
 
2. In the Look In box, click the Windows folder.
 
3. In the File Name box, type "inv5.ini" (without quotation marks),
   and then click Open.
 
If the issue continues to occur, remove and reinstall Investor.
