SUMMARY
=======

Because of physical read limitations of some CD-ROM drives, you may
be unable to open some of the files and folders on the Microsoft Encarta
Encyclopedia 99 Standard Edition CD-ROM. This article lists those files and
describes how to test your CD-ROM drive.

MORE INFORMATION
================

If your CD-ROM drive is not a full-capacity drive, it may be unable to
properly read files from the following folder on the Encarta Encyclopedia
99 Standard Edition CD-ROM:

   Encyc99\Dswmedia\Ia\T041755a\Media\Ph

This folder is located in the 637-642 megabyte (MB) range on the Encarta 99
CD-ROM. The Encarta Encyclopedia 99 Standard Edition CD-ROM contains 642 MB
of information. The following file is the last file on the CD-ROM:

   Encyc99\Dswmedia\Ia\T041755a\Media\Ph\T055000a.swa

To test the capacity of your CD-ROM drive, copy some files from the end of
the CD-ROM to your hard disk, and then use the MS-DOS File Compare program
(Fc.exe) to compare the copies to the files on the CD-ROM. The following
table lists the names and locations of three files located in folders near
the end of the CD-ROM:

   File Location
   ---------------------------------------------------------------

   Encyc99\Dswmedia\Ia\T041755a\Media\Ph\T050690k.swa 641-642 MB
   Encyc99\Dswmedia\Ia\T620271a\T620271a.dcr 633-634 MB
   Encyc99\Dswmedia\Hibrow\Hbmedia\N1.cct 626-627 MB

To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click MS-DOS Prompt.

2. At the command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after
   each line:

      cd\
      md cdtest
      cd cdtest

3. At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER

      copy <cdrom>:\Encyc99\Dswmedia\Ia\T041755a\Media\Ph\T050690k.swa

where <cdrom> is the letter for your CD-ROM drive.

If you receive a "CDR101: Not Ready" error message when you copy the
file, the CD-ROM drive cannot read the area of the CD-ROM where the file
   is located.

4. If you copy the file successfully, type the following line at the
command prompt, and then press ENTER

      fc /b <cdrom>:\Encyc99\Dswmedia\Ia\T041755a\Media\Ph\T050690k.swa
      <disk>:\cdtest\T050690k.swa

where <cdrom> is the letter for your CD-ROM drive, and <disk> is the
   letter for your hard disk.

If you receive any error messages, the CD-ROM drive cannot read the area
of the CD-ROM where the file is located.

5. At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER

      copy <cdrom>:\Encyc99\Dswmedia\Ia\T620271a\T620271a.dcr

where <cdrom> is the letter for your CD-ROM drive.

If you receive a "CDR101: Not Ready" error message when you copy the
file, the CD-ROM drive cannot read the area of the CD-ROM where the file
   is located.

6. If you copy the file successfully, type the following line at the
command prompt, and then press ENTER

      fc /b <cdrom>:\Encyc99\Dswmedia\Ia\T620271a\T620271a.dcr
      <disk>:\cdtest\T620271a.dcr

where <cdrom> is the letter for your CD-ROM drive, and <disk> is the
   letter for your hard disk.

If you receive any error messages, the CD-ROM drive cannot read the area
of the CD-ROM where the file is located.

7. At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER

      copy <cdrom>:\Encyc99\Dswmedia\Hibrow\Hbmedia\N1.cct

where <cdrom> is the letter for your CD-ROM drive.

If you receive a "CDR101: Not Ready" error message when you copy the
file, the CD-ROM drive cannot read the area of the CD-ROM where the file
   is located.

8. If you copy the file successfully, type the following line at the
command prompt, and then press ENTER

      fc /b <cdrom>:\Encyc99\Dswmedia\Hibrow\Hbmedia\N1.cct
      <disk>:\cdtest\N1.cct

where <cdrom> is the letter for your CD-ROM drive, and <disk> is the
   letter for your hard disk.

If you receive any error messages, the CD-ROM drive cannot read the area
of the CD-ROM where the file is located.

9. When you finish testing the CD-ROM drive, delete the test files on your
hard disk. To do this, type the following lines at the command prompt,
   pressing ENTER after each line:

      cd\
      deltree cdtest

When you are prompted to delete the Cdtest folder and all its contents,
   press the Y key.

10. At the command prompt, type "exit" (without quotation marks), and then
   press ENTER.
