The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a, 4.0c
---------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

If you open a PowerPoint for Windows 95 version 7.0 presentation in
PowerPoint 4.0 for Windows, the date in the footer on either the slide
or the notes page may be incorrectly formatted in a three-digit format
similar to this:

   01/01/104

This behavior occurs if all of the following are true:

 - The system date is set to the year 2000 or greater.

    -and-

 - You inserted the date field in your presentation and chose to have
   them update automatically.

    -and-

 - The dates are formatted in any two-digit format (such as 01/01/04).

NOTE: This symptom also occurs if you use the 16-bit viewer for
PowerPoint 7.0 to view a slide show.

CAUSE
=====

You have an older version of the Pp7trans.dll file. This file is not
year 2000 compliant.

PowerPoint 4.0 cannot directly open files created in later versions of PowerPoint. To open files created in later versions of PowerPoint, you
should install the add-on converters. The add-on converter for opening
PowerPoint 7.0 files in PowerPoint 4.0 is called Pp7trans.dll.

RESOLUTION
==========

To correct this problem, update your copy of Pp7trans.dll by using one
of the following methods.

Method 1: If you are running PowerPoint 4.0 on Windows 3.x
----------------------------------------------------------

Download and install the Ppview16.exe file. You can download this file
from the following Microsoft FTP site:

   ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles/ppview16.exe

NOTE: This program does not run on Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT.

Method 2: If you are running PowerPoint 4.0 on Windows 95/98 or Windows NT
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download the Ppty2kus.exe file. You can download this file from the
following Microsoft FTP site:

   ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles/ppty2kus.exe

After you download the file, follow these steps:

1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, and then click Windows
   Explorer.

2. Open the folder in which you saved the Ppty2kus.exe file and then
   double-click it.

   When the program runs, it prompts you for the folder where the
   PowerPoint 7.0 files are installed.

3. Click Browse.

4. Select the folder in which you installed PowerPoint 4.0 and click OK.
