SUMMARY
=======

The Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 1 message transfer agent
(MTA) (build 2232.16) requires the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol
(LDAP) for distribution list expansion.

The LDAP protocol is enabled by default. However, disabling LDAP at the
site or server level in Exchange Administrator does not affect the ability
of the MTA to access the directory and expand distribution lists.

MORE INFORMATION
================

In most cases, disabling LDAP at the site or server level in Exchange
Administrator only affects client queries to the directory, not MTA
queries. The MTA is not dependent upon the Exchange Administrator Graphical
User Interface for DL expansion, except in special builds of the MTA,
including build 2304.

If you are not sure what build of the MTA you are running, use one of the
following two ways to find out:

1. Stop and restart the MTA. Go to Event Viewer and look for Event ID 9298.
   There you will see the MTA build number.

2. Get the properties of \\exchsrvr\mtadata\emsmta.exe. Go to the Version
   tab, File Version: 5.5.xxxx.xx.
