SYMPTOMS

You cannot permanently select a filing status on the Tax tab in the Options
dialog box in Microsoft Money 99 or 98. Whenever you return to this tab, the tax
rates for the Single filing status is displayed.

This behavior is by design.

The Tax tab in the Options dialog box is used to display the current tax tables
Money downloads for each filing status. In addition, you can click Custom in the
Filing Status box to use custom tax rates.
 
You can specify your tax filing status in the Tax worksheet found in the Decision
Center in Money 99 or Money Insider in Money 98. Money uses this selection and
the tax rates shown here when calculating your potential federal taxes.
 
To Specify Your Filing Status In Money 99

1. On the Money navigation bar, click Decisions.
 
2. In the left pane, click Tools.
 
3. Under Worksheets, click Tax Worksheet.
 
4. In the Filing Status box, click the status you want.
 
5. If you want, you can change any other setting that is appropriate.
 
To Specify Your Filing Status In Money 98

1. On the Money navigation bar, click Money Insider.
 
2. Under Worksheets, click Tax Worksheet.
 
3. In the Filing Status box, click the status you want to use.
 
4. If you want, you can change any other setting that is appropriate.
 
To View the Current Tax Rates For Each Filing Status
----------------------------------------------------
 
1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
 
2. Click the Tax tab. Tax rates and income ranges are displayed for the Single
   filing status.
 
3. In the Show Rates For Filing Status box, click the status you want.
 
To Enter Customized Tax Rates
-----------------------------
 
1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
 
2. Click the Tax tab.
 
3. In the Show Rates For Filing Status box, click Custom.
 
4. Type the appropriate information in the remaining fields.
 
5. When you are finished, click OK.
