The information in this article applies to:
 
 - Microsoft Windows Update, used with:
    - Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4.0, 5 for Windows 98

SYMPTOMS
========
 
You may receive a Java Script error message when attempting to use the Windows
Update Site. Here is an example of the message that you may receive:
 
   CDM- JScript error clicking between available updates.
   Line:   6
   Char:   1
   Error:  Object Expected
 
RESOLUTION
==========
 
When you finish the steps in each of the following sections, test to determine
if the scripting error still occurs. If the issue is resolved, do not continue
to the remaining sections. If the issue is not resolved, continue to the next
section.
 
Method 1: Internet Related Folders
----------------------------------
 
WARNING: If you have a cookie that stores a password for a particular Web site,
copy the contents of the Cookies folder to a new folder before deleting the
folder. To do so, type "md (new folder) copy c: \windows\cookies\*.*
c:\windows\(new folder)" (without the quotation marks) at the command promp, and
press ENTER after each command. The (new folder) is the folder to which you want
to copy the contents of the Cookies folder.
 
To delete Internet related folders:
 
1. Restart your computer. When you see the "Starting Windows 98" message, press
   F8, and then select the Command Prompt Only option.
 
2. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each
   command, and pressing Y if you are prompted to confirm deleting a folder.
   Please note that these folders are re-created each time you restart your
   computer, but the contents are not saved. All of the items in your Favorites
   folder will be deleted when you follow these steps.
 
    - cd windows
 
    - deltree tempor~1
 
    - deltree cookies
 
    - deltree history
 
3. Restart your computer.
 
Method 2: Installing Microsoft Scripting Engine or Windows Script 5.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------
 
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, install the newest version of the
Visual Basic Scripting Support (for customers using Internet Explorer 5) or
install Windows Script 5.0 (for customers using Internet Explorer 4).
 
INSTALLING VISUAL BASIC SCRIPTING SUPPORT ON INTERNET EXPLORER 5
 
1. Click Start, point to Settings and then click Control Panel.
 
2. Double-click the Add/Remove icon.
 
3. Click the Install/Uninstall tab, select Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and
   Internet Tools.
 
4. Click Add/Remove.
 
5. Click "Add a component" and then click OK.
 
6. Once the Internet Explorer 5 setup program has initialized, scroll down to
   the "Web Authoring Components" section and select the "Visual Basic Scripting
   Support" option.
 
7. Click Next. You may receive a prompt warning you that the most recent version
   of the item selected is already installed. If this occurs, click "Reinstall
   all components" and then click OK.
 
8. When the download and installation of the VBScript Support component has
   finished, click Finish.
 
9. This should automatically restart your computer. If it does not, restart your
   computer prior to connecting to the Windows Update Web site.
 
10. Go to the Windows Update Web site at:
   http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
 
INSTALLING WINDOWS SCRIPT ON INTERNET EXPLORER 4
 
1. Direct the customer to:
   http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/vbscript/scripting.asp
 
2. Select the appropriate language version of Windows Script.
 
3. Follow the instructions to download and install Windows Script.
 
4. Restart your computer.
 
5. Go to the Windows Update Web site at:
   http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
 
Method 3: Microsoft Virtual Machine
-----------------------------------
 
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, download the newest version of the
Microsoft Virtual Machine.
 
1. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm31.htm
 
2. After reading the End User License Agreement(EULA), click "I accept:..".
 
3. On the page titled "Microsoft Virtual Machine for Microsoft Windows 95, 98,
   and NT 4.0 on x89 Architectures", click MSJAVX86.exe next to the download
   site closest to you.
 
4. When prompted, select the option to save the file to your hard drive.
 
5. After the download is complete, locate and double-click the downloaded file
   on your system.
 
6. After the file is installed, restart your computer.

incident to Windows Update Support by following these steps:
 
1. Go to http://support.microsoft.com
 
2. Click "Frequently Asked Questions".
 
3. Select Windows Update from the pull-down menu, and then click Go.
 
4. Click "General Questions about Windows Update".
 
5. Scroll down and click "If the information listed in this FAQ did not address
   your issue..., you may submit a support request".
 
6. This will take you to the Windows Update Site Support Request form and
   instructions for submitting your request.
