SYMPTOMS
========

When you attempt to register for Member Services online, Internet Explorer
may search for a modem although you have configured your Internet
connection for local area network.

CAUSE
=====

If the Registration Wizard does not detect a connection to the Internet
within 12 seconds, it may search for a modem to use for the connection.

RESOLUTION
==========

First, check your proxy settings in Internet Explorer to make sure that
they are configured correctly for the environment.

1. In the View menu, click Internet Options

2. Click the Connection tab

3. Click the "Connect to the Internet using a local area network" option

4. Contact your System Administrator for any additional configuration
   instructions specific to your network

Next, confirm you are connected to the Internet.

1. Start Internet Explorer

2. In the Address box, type "http://www.microsoft.com/" (without
   quotation marks) and then press ENTER.

3. After the page has loaded, click Refresh. This is to ensure Internet
   Explorer is not reading from its cache.

If the page loads normally, delays in the Internet and/or your companies
intranet may be preventing your registration from completing. Please try
again at a later time.

If the page does not load normally, Internet and/or intranet delays may be
the cause; it is also possible that you are not correctly connecting to
the Internet.

If you are able to access pages on the Internet and are unable to access
the Registration site, your proxy server may not be configured to allow
connections to the Windows update site. Contact your system administrator
for more information.
