SUMMARY
=======

This article explains when Microsoft Money compacts a data file and when it
compresses a data file, and the difference between the two.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Compacting
----------

When you quit Money, it compacts the data file to minimize disk usage if
one or more of the following conditions is true:

 - The file was newly created.

 - The file was archived (on the File menu, click Archive).

 - The file is 300 kilobytes (KB) larger than the size it was after the
   last time it was compacted.

NOTE: Money does not compact files based on the number of times you have
quit the program.

Compressing
-----------

Money compresses the data whenever you create a backup data file. To do
this, on the File menu, click Backup (in Money 98) or click Back Up (in
Money 99). Money compresses the backup file using a more space-efficient
storage method than compaction, which prevents you from using the backup
file while it is in a compressed format.
