SUMMARY
=======

Because of physical read limitations of some CD-ROM drives, you may be unable to
open some of the files and folders on disc 1 of the Microsoft Outwars compact
disc. This article lists those files and supplies a method to test your CD-ROM
drive.

MORE INFORMATION
================

The CD-ROM drive may have difficulty reading the final folder, listed below,
from Outwars disc 1. Outwars disc 1 is a mixed mode CD-ROM; this means the
compact disc contains both data and CD Audio tracks. Listed below are the last
CD Audio track and the last data folder.

+---------------------------------------------------------------+
| Folder/Description | Location on disc |
+---------------------------------------------------------------+
| Audio track 17 | 592-609 MB |
+---------------------------------------------------------------+
| Last data is located in the root directory | 314-328 MB |
+---------------------------------------------------------------+

To test for specific drive-capacity limitations, attempt to gain access to the
following files and track.

+-------------------------------------------------------------+
| Files | Location on disc |
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
| Audio Track 17 | 592-609 MB |
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
| Units.ff (located in the root directory) | 319-328 MB |
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
| Voices\Cmders\H_aia.wav | 294-295 MB |
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
| Sructs\Rag01.tpc | 275-278 MB |
+-------------------------------------------------------------+

Disc 1 of Microsoft Outwars contains 609 MB of information. It contains 328 MB of
data and 281 MB of CD Audio. The final data file on the compact disc is
Vga8x8.fnt (located in the root directory). The final audio track on disc 1 is
audio track 17.

Testing Your CD-ROM Drive
-------------------------

To test an audio track, attempt to play the track using Media Player. To do this,
follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to Multimedia,
   and then click Media Player.

2. On the Device menu, click CD Audio.

3. When the Outwars tracks are displayed on the slider, move the slider to track
17, and then click the Play button.

To test the integrity of any files you copy from your CD-ROM drive to your hard
disk, compare the files using the MS-DOS File Compare program (Fc.exe). You can
use this test to determine if the CD-ROM subsystem is functioning properly at
the device driver or hardware level(s).

The Fc.exe program is a useful method for testing problems related to general
protection (GP) faults or other critical errors (such as read errors or out of
memory messages) that may occur when you use CD-ROM drives with Windows
programs.

To test your CD-ROM drive, attempt to copy one of the following files to your
hard disk.

+-------------------------------------------------------------+
| Files | Location on disc |
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
| Units.ff (located in the root directory) | 319-328 MB |
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
| Voices\Cmders\H_aia.wav | 294-295 MB |
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
| Structs\Rag01.tpc | 275-278 MB |
+-------------------------------------------------------------+

For information about how to copy files in Windows, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Help.

2. On the Index tab, type "copying" (without the quotation marks), and then
   double-click Files Or Folders.

3. Click Copying A File Or Folder, and then click Display.

If you receive the following error message

   CDR101: Not Ready

the CD-ROM drive cannot read the disc at the specified location.

If the file is copied, test the file's integrity by using Fc.exe with the /B
(binary) switch. For example, to compare the Units.ff file on the CD-ROM to the
Units.ff file you copied to your hard disk, type the following at the MS-DOS
command prompt, and then press ENTER

   fc /b <D>:\Units.ff <C>:\Units.ff

where <D> is the letter of your CD-ROM drive, and <C> is the letter
of your hard disk.

If you receive errors, your CD-ROM drive is having problems reading the compact
disc at that location.
