The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Outlook Express versions 4.0, 4.01 for Windows NT 4.0

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry.
Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if
a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring
the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key"
Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS
========

When you compose a new message to post to a moderated newsgroup, the
Approved By line below the Subject line may be missing in the newsgroup
header.

CAUSE
=====

This behavior may occur if Outlook Express is not configured to display
full headers, or an entry in the registry contains incorrect data.

RESOLUTION
==========

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor
can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And
Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete
Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in
Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Verify that you are viewing full headers.

    a. In Outlook Express, click the newsgroup section that you want to
       post a message to.

    b. On the Compose menu, click New Message.

    c. In the New Message, click Full Headers on the View menu.

2. If you can view the Approved By line, you do not need to do anything
   else. However, if you cannot view the Approved By line, change the
   Moderator value to 1 in the following registry subkey:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\news

MORE INFORMATION
================

The Moderator value in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\news subkey is set to 0 by default.

Readers of some newsgroups may choose not to read off-topic messages that
are not approved by the newsgroup moderator (the newsgroup listing usually
ends with a ".d" suffix). If you enable this functionality, an "Approved
by:" line appears in the header of the newsgroup, if Outlook Express is
configured to display full headers.
