256219 OLEXP: How to Manually Uninstall and Reinstall Outlook Express 5

To manually uninstall Outlook Express, follow these steps:
  1. On the Start menu, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer or Windows NT Explorer.
  2. Locate the Outlook Express folder in the C:\Program Files folder.
  3. Delete the files that are located in the <Drive Letter>:\Program Files\Outlook Express folder.

WARNING: Do not delete the actual Outlook Express folder. By doing so you may cause Outlook Express to install to the \Program Files\Outloo~1 folder. Outlook Express may not function if it installs to the Outloo~1 folder, and renaming Outloo~1 to Outlook Express may not work.
  4. Locate the Stationery folder in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared folder.
  5. Rename the Stationery folder to Old Stationery.
  6. Locate the Outlook Express folder. If you are running Windows 95, the Outlook Express folder is located in the C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft folder. If you are running Windows NT 4.0, the Outlook Express folder is located in the %SystemRoot%\Profiles\Username\Application Data\Microsoft folder, where Username is the name you use to log on to Windows NT 4.0.
  7. Rename the Outlook Express folder to old_outlook.

The Quick Launch area of the taskbar contains a shortcut to Outlook Express that may still exist after you remove Outlook Express. To remove this shortcut, right-click the Outlook Express icon in the Quick Launch bar, and then click Delete.
  8. Rename the Windows Address Book (WAB) files. If you are running Windows NT 4.0, the WAB files are located in the %SystemRoot%\Profiles\Username\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book folder.

The WAB files have a .wab extension. To rename a WAB file, right-click the filename.wab file, click Rename, rename the file to filename.xxx, and then press ENTER. Rename all .wab files in this folder.WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

  9. Using Registry Editor, remove the appropriate registry key for Outlook Express.
