SUMMARY
=======

To increase your swap space, you can make a larger swap partition
(Partition 1). When you do this, however, you must then reinstall IRIX
because this procedure destroys the Data partition. To avoid this problem,
you can create a swap file.

MORE INFORMATION
================

You can find general information in the IRIX manual pages by using the
command: man swap.

Creating a Swap File
====================

1. Create a swap file (300 megabytes contiguous) on a local disk:

      /Usr/Sbin/Makefile 300m /Mydisk/Swap/AddedSwap

2. Make it active:

      /Sbin/Swap -a /Mydisk/Swap/AddedSwap

3. If you want it active at boot time, edit the file /Etc/Fstab and add the
   following line:

      /Mydisk/Swap/AddedSwap swap swap pri-3 0 0

Adjust Virtual Swap
===================

1. For swap space, type the following

      swap  l

   and add up all the values that are under maxswap; this will give you a
   value that we will call X.

2. For physical memory, type the command:

      hinv

3. Take the memory size and multiply it by 2048; this will give you a value
   that we will call Y.

4. Now, do the following calculation:

     (X + Y) * 2 = Z

5. Type the command

      jot /Etc/Config/Vswap.options

   and enter the Z value on the Vswaplen line.

6. To validate virtual swap use the command:

      chkconfig vswap on

7. Reboot the machine.
