The information in this article applies to:

 - Softimage Eddie for IRIX, version 3.5

SYMPTOMS
========

Color Reduction is not working on IRIX: cannot load any picture files.

CAUSE
=====

There are different paths set by an identically-named environment. The
conflicting environment variables get defined when both the .softimage and
the .eddie files are sourced. The environment variable is SI_IMAGE_PATH
(Softimage Image Library path); the image library that SOFTIMAGE|3D and
SI|Eddie use is different. The problem occurs when the .eddie file is the
last setup file sourced (usually sourced in your .cshrc).

RESOLUTION
==========

To work around this behavior, you can do one of the following:

 - Give Eddie and Softimage different login accounts.

  -or-

 - Remove the "source .eddie" command from the .cshrc and create an alias
   to start up Eddie. For this work around, complete the following:

1. Modify the ~/.cshrc:

   Remove (or comment the line out with a "#") the following line:

      source [location of the .eddie]/.eddie

   Make sure you keep the "source [location of the .softimage]/.softimage"
   line.

2. Create an alias to start Eddie:

   Add the following lines to your ~/.alias file (if none exists, create
   the file and make sure it also gets sourced in the ~/.cshrc):

   alias ed35 cd $HOME; source [location of the .eddie]/.eddie; eddie
   alias ed35_16 cd $HOME; source [location of the .eddie]/.eddie; eddie16

Clarification of the alias created for Eddie:

Give the alias a name other than the actual executables name (ex: ed35):
this will prevent creating an alias loop.

"cd $HOME" for various reasons, such as:

  - this is where the Preferences file (.eddie35rc) is saved.
  - your read and write browsers will open at your home directory by
    default.
  - access problems due to permissions are ruled out.
