 - Softimage 3D for IRIX, version 3.7

SYMPTOMS
========

When trying to run a mental ray render on an Origin2000 using 32 CPUs, the
error message "No more free space" appears.

CAUSE
=====

On 32-bit SGIs, the 4 Gigabyte virtual memory area is divided into four
quadrants. The stack has to be completely inside one of them; so it is
limited to 1 Gigabyte of memory.

RESOLUTION
==========

On 64-bit SGIs with more than 32 CPUs, the reported stacksize limit of
50000 can be safely reduced to 10000 or less. Mental ray does not do
recursive function calls excessively so it does not need more than 10 MB
stack space.

Another option for 64-bit SGIs is to use the 64-bit version of mental ray
that offers adequate virtual memory space.
