SUMMARY
=======

Unexplained long render time may be a result of instances that your scene
contains. In order to render instances, the mental ray renderer must
internally tessellate them as if they were real objects. Even if the scene
has a low triangle count, at render time this number can increase
drastically if there are many instances.

Instances cause slow render performance as well as using up additional
memory and swap space. So when you use instances, keep in mind that they
are expanded at render-time.
