The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Money 99
 - Microsoft Money 98
 - Microsoft Money versions 4.0, 4.0a, 5.0 for Windows 95
 - Microsoft Money versions 3.0, 3.0a
---------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

In Microsoft Money version 4.x, 5.0, Money 98 or Money 99, when you try to
send a request to a bank or to obtain either Online or Internet Quotes, you
may receive the following error message:

Money could not send your instructions with your current .MNY
file name. Please rename your file.

In Microsoft Money 3.0 Pay On-Line, Bank On-Line or Quotes On-Line, when
you click Call, you may receive the following error message before you are
asked for your PIN:

Money has reset its state after a communication file was deleted
from disk. Please try your call again.

Clicking OK, and then clicking Call repeats the same error.

CAUSE
=====

This problem occurs when Microsoft Money tries to create a send or receive
file for a connection. Before initializing the communication session, Money
creates a file with the instructions to be sent, and prepares a second file
to receive the online information. The send and receive files have the same
name as your Money data file, but with a different extension.

There are several possible causes for why the send and receive files
cannot be created.

 - You may have copies of previous send and receive files that are
   corrupted.

 - There may be insufficient disk space available on the drive where your
   Money data file is stored.

 - There may be damaged sections of the drive, which prevents Money
   from creating the files.

 - There may be invalid characters in the Microsoft Money data file name,
preventing the creation of a send or receive file with those characters
   in the file name.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this problem, try each of the following methods.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Windows, the following steps
may be different on your computer. If they are, please consult your product
documentation to complete these steps.

Previous Send or Receive Files
------------------------------

To see if there are previous send and receive files on your system, follow
these steps:

1. Verify that your folder options are set to show file extensions.

    a. Double-click My Computer.

    b. Click the Options command on the View menu.

    c. Click the View tab.

    d. Click to clear the "Hide MS-DOS File Extensions" check box.

    e. Click OK.

2. Use the Find command to search for send and receive files.

    a. Click the Start button, point to Find and click Files or Folders.

    b. In the Named box, type the name of your Money data file, replacing
the extension (the part of the name after the period) with an
       asterisk.

For example, if your data file is titled My Money.mny, type the
       following:

        "My Money.*"

(Quotation marks are needed if there are spaces in the file name.)

    c. Verify that the Look In line indicates either the drive on which
Money is installed or All Local Hard Drives. Also verify that the
Include Subfolders check box is selected.

    d. Click Find Now or press ENTER to begin searching.

4. If more than one file is found, rename the file(s) that do not have an
   .mny .ldb or .mbf extension.

For more information about renaming a file, refer to the "To change the
name of a file or folder" topic in the Windows 95 Online help.

Checking for Insufficient Disk Space
------------------------------------

Microsoft Money stores the send and receive files in the same location as
your data file. To determine the free disk space on a drive, follow these
steps:

1. On the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.

2. On the View menu, click Details.

3. Under the Free Space column, verify that there is sufficient space on
the floppy disk or hard disk.

If your file is on a floppy disk, you should have at least 100 kilobytes
(KB) available. If your file is on a hard disk, the hard disk should
have at least 10 megabytes (MB) available.

In addition, Windows cannot access more than 2 gigabytes (GB) of hard
disk space on a single drive unless you have have the Fat32 file system
installed. This file system is available with Windows 98 and the OSR2
version of Windows 95. Because of this limitation, if you have more than
2 GB of hard disk space on a single drive, you may not be able to save
files although Windows may report that space is available.

Compressed drives cannot be larger than 512 MB if you are using the
original version of DriveSpace for Windows 95. You need to have DriveSpace3
to access more than 512 MB, and then the 2 GB limit comes into effect.
DriveSpace3 is available with Windows 98 and the Plus! Pack for Windows 95.

Damage to Drive or File System
------------------------------

You may have bad sectors, lost chains or crosslinked clusters on your
drive. Run Scandisk on your drive and allow Scandisk to fix your errors.

1. Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Accessories,
then System Tools, and then click Scandisk.

2. Click to select the Automatically Fix Errors check box and then click
   Start.

File Name Problems
------------------

Rename your data file to a standard MS-DOS 8.3 name. To do this, follow
these steps:

1. Click the Start button, point to Programs, and click Windows Explorer.

2. Navigate to the folder where you installed Microsoft Money; the default
   location is:

      C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money

3. Use the right mouse button to click (right-click) your Money data file
and click Rename on the shortcut menu.

4. Type a new name that contains no more than eight letters or numbers,
followed by the extension ".mny" (without the quotation marks), and
   press ENTER.

NOTE: Do note use any punctuation in the file name.

5. Double-click the renamed file. This will open Microsoft Money with
   the newly renamed file.
