SYMPTOMS
========

Microsoft Money may not find checks that need to be printed or it may
report that there are checks to be printed when there are none. The
following symptoms have been reported.

When you put the word "Print" in the check Number field, the print reminder
is not shown. Then, when you click Print Checks on the File menu, you
receive the following error message:

You don't have any Bank Accounts with checks to be printed.

-or-

When you remove Print from all of the check Number fields and click Print
Checks on the File menu, you receive a different error message:

There are no checks to print in the 'Checking' account. Money
will only print checks for transactions that have "Print" in
   the Number field.

-or-

When you go to the Bills area, you see a reminder that there are
4294967295 checks to print (the actual number may vary). However, there
are really no checks to print. If you click Print Checks in the reminder,
you receive the following error message:

You don't have any Bank Accounts with checks to be printed.

-or-

There is a reminder to print checks, but Print is not in any check's Number
field. Then, if you try to print checks you receive the following error
message:

There are no checks to be printed.

CAUSE
=====

These error messages are all caused by increasing or decreasing the
internal check counter in Money.

Money decreases the check counter if you remove Print from the Number field
of a transfer transaction before printing your check.

RESOLUTION
==========

Microsoft has developed and has made available for download the
Prncount.exe utility, that resets the check counter.

NOTE: This file does not prevent the counter from becoming incorrect in the
future.

To prevent the counter from becoming incorrect in the future, treat all
transfers to be printed in either of the following two ways:

1. Print all transfer transactions prior to deleting the word "Print." For
additional information, please see the following article in the
   Microsoft Knowledge Base:

      ARTICLE-ID: Q179666
TITLE : Money 98: The Word "Print" Remains in Transferred
                  Transactions

2. Enter the Transfer transaction with the final check number. Then, edit
the transaction and change the check number to Print. In this case, the
transaction in the other account will not have Print in its Number
   field.

STATUS
======

Microsoft is currently researching the cause of the check counter being
increased, which results in the reminder reporting that there are checks to
be printed when none exist.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article.

NOTE: The file(s) mentioned in this article only apply to the U.S. English
version of Microsoft Money 98.

The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Software
Library:

 ~ Checkcnt.exe

For more information about downloading files from the Microsoft Software
Library, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

   ARTICLE-ID: Q119591
TITLE : How to Obtain Microsoft Support Files from Online Services

Save the file to a location on your hard disk (not in your Windows\System
folder) and then double-click Checkcnt.exe. This extracts two files:

Prncount.exe - This resets the check printing counter.

Readme.txt - Information on how to use this file.

Contents of Readme.txt
----------------------

Using the Prncount.exe Utility:

 1. Copy Prncount.exe to the Microsoft Money folder.

 2. Open your file in Microsoft Money. Remove the word Print
from the Number field in all transactions of every account,
    and in the Bills area.

 3. If you have a password protecting your Money file, remove it.
Or, you can use the [-p password] switch when using the utility,
    (see step 7).

 4. Quit Microsoft Money.

 5. Click the Start button, point to Programs and then click MS-DOS
    Prompt.

 6. At the MS-DOS Prompt, type the following, changing the path to the
specific path where your Microsoft Money data file is stored, then
    press ENTER:

       CD "\Program Files\Microsoft Money"

 7. At the MS-DOS Prompt, type the following, entering the name of your
data file and the name of the new file that will contain the repaired
print counter, and press ENTER, for example:

prncount [-p password] "old name.mny" "new file name.mny"

NOTE: The quotation marks allow you to include spaces that are part
of the file name. You can include the password for your Money file
if you did not remove it before running the utility.

To include your password, use the switch [-p password] (without
the brackets), replacing "password" with your file-specific
password. (If you don't have a password, do not type the [-p password]
    part of the command.)

 8. After the conversion is complete, type "exit" (without the quotation
marks) at the MS-DOS prompt, and press ENTER to return to Windows.

 9. Click the Start button, point to Programs and then click Windows
    Explorer.

10. Navigate to your Microsoft Money folder. If you want, you can delete
or rename your old file. Then, you can rename the new file to
the old file's name. Alternatively, you can leave the new file
with the new name if you prefer.

11. Double-click the new file to associate it with Microsoft
Money and open it. Verify that the print counter has been
    correctly reset.
