SUMMARY
=======

This article describes how to determine the version of a Money data file.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Since any particular version of Money can only open data files for its own
version or earlier, you may want to determine what version of Money created
a specific data file.

To find out the version of a Money data file, you can open the file in
either Wordpad or Windows Write and the character in the fifth position
will tell you what version of Money was used to create the Money
data file. For more information on how to open a file in Wordpad or Windows
Write, see "Opening a File in Wordpad" or Windows Write at the end of this
article.

NOTE: This method cannot distinguish Money 98 from Money 99 files.

The following are the symbols found at the fifth position:

  Money version       Character
  -------------       -------------------------------------
      1.0 (box) this an unprintable character.
      2.0             :
      3.0             Z
      4.0             v
      5.0 (Money 97) the letters CE attached together
      6.0 (Money 98) Standard Jet DB
      7.0 (Money 99) Standard Jet DB

NOTE: Close Wordpad or Write without saving any changes to the data file or
you will risk corrupting the data file.

If the version of the data file is later than the version of Money that you
are attempting to open the file in, Money will not be able to open it. You
will get the following error message:

  <file name> is corrupted or is not a Money data file.

NOTE: This error can also occur if the Windows system cryptography provider
is not properly registered in the Windows registry. For more information on
this error message, please see the following article in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base:
