SYMPTOMS
========

When you import an investment statement, Add Shares transactions may not
match Buy transactions that you previously entered, and Remove Share
transactions may not match Sell transactions that you previously entered.

This results in Money adding a Remove or Add Shares transaction to
reconcile the position recorded in the import. If First In First Out
(FIFO) is used for tracking lots, the Remove Shares is applied to the
oldest Buys instead of the appropriate Buy, thereby affecting the Capital
Gains report.

CAUSE
=====

This can happen if the shares were not acquired through a purchase by the
broker. For example, an Employee Stock Purchase Plan or a transfer from
another brokerage. In these cases, the broker records the transaction as an
Add Shares transaction.

This can also happen if the source of the import exports the transactions
as Add Shares instead of Buys, or Remove Shares instead of Sells.

Downloaded Add or Remove Share transactions do not match with any Buy or
Sell transactions that you may have entered manually in your account
register. This behavior is by design.

RESOLUTION
==========

The Add Shares transactions need to be tracked as lots, not as FIFO. By
tracking them as lots you will can choose which lot to associate with
the Remove Shares transaction. In the case of the example above, you would
want to associate the new Remove Shares transaction with the broker
imported Add Shares transaction.

To correctly assign the Add Shares transaction as the lot being removed by
the Remove Shares transaction, follow these steps:

1. While in the Position Matching phase of reading your broker imported
   statement, click to select the "Yes, Update My Positions As Indicated
   Above" option and click Next.

2. When asked whether you want to specify which lot to close, click Yes,
   and then click Next.

3. Click to select the corresponding Add Shares transaction.
   NOTE: This will be the transaction with <no price>.

4. Click Select Shares. This will default to showing the total number of
   shares for this lot, and then click OK.

   NOTE: If the Remove Shares transaction covered multiple Add Shares
   transactions, you will need to repeat steps 4 and 5 until the
   total selected equals the Shares to use.

If FIFO was already selected during the Statement reading process, you
can correct the mismatched lot by deleting the Remove Shares transaction
added by Money and then create your own Remove Shares transaction
containing the same details. Follow steps 2-5 above to ensure that it is
matched with the proper Add Shares transaction.

MORE INFORMATION
================

If you have set the option to track all investments as FIFO, you will
need to reverse this choice in order for Money to be able to accurately
report on this investment.

To not use "Track All Investments As FIFO," follow these steps:

1. On the Tools menu, click Options.

2. On the Investments tab, click to clear the "Track all investments as
   FIFO" check box (in Money 98) or "Track all investments as FIFO (first
   acquired)" check box (in Money 99). Click OK.
