Tips for using Microsoft Expedia Streets 98

This document contains information that will help you get the most out of
Microsoft Expedia Streets 98 and your system. Information about Microsoft
Pocket Expedia Streets 98 and the Microsoft GPS Add-on is available near
the end of this document.

To read this file on your screen, use the PAGE DOWN and PAGE UP keys on
your keyboard. You can print the file by choosing the Print command from
the File menu.

Subscriptions

Microsoft offers subscriptions to Streets. You can receive annual updates
as soon as they become available, and save yourself time and money. Please
open Help Contents to see a link to subscription information.

Upgrading from Automap Streets Plus

Uninstall older versions of Automap Streets Plus before installing Expedia
Streets 98.

Do not install two versions of Streets into the same folder as only the
last one installed will work correctly.

Setup Issues

Streets is designed to work with Internet Explorer 3.02. Setup installs
Internet Explorer automatically if it determines that an installation or
upgrade of the browser is required. The Internet Explorer installed by
Setup will not take over as your default web browser, nor will it affect
your browser settings; it is only used to display articles in the product.
Setup may display a "Yes/No" dialog advising you that it detected a
compatible version and will not need to upgrade. Otherwise, it displays
an "OK/Cancel" dialog asking you to confirm the browser installation.

Users who have already installed patches to Microsoft Internet Explorer
may receive a warning that there are newer files on the system than those
setup is trying to install. Press "Yes" to keep the newer files.

Setting up Streets may take a few moments longer than other applications,
as numerous fonts and other files need to be installed to optimize your map
display. Do not exit out of Setup when the "Setup is updating your system"
message is displayed; this process will be completed on its own.

Because Streets installs system files that might be shared with other
applications, you should shut down other applications when running Setup.

If a loss of power, a power surge, or some other unexpected incident
interrupts Setup, restart Windows before you run Setup again.

For information about minimum system requirements, from the Help menu in
Streets, click Contents, press the Index button, and type "minimum system
requirements".

Using Microsoft Expedia Trip Planner 98 with Streets

Streets 98 and Trip Planner 98 share Pushpins. You can find an address
in Streets 98 and then use Trip Planner 98 to plan a trip to that location.
However, the "quick switch" feature available in Streets 97 is no longer
available.

You can run both Trip Planner 98 and Streets 98 simultaneously on the
same computer; just be sure to place the correct CD-ROM in the drive when
you switch to the respective application.

MSCam

MSCam is a screen capture utility included with Microsoft Office 97.
Expedia Streets will not run while MSCam is running.

CD-ROM Care

Do not remove the Streets compact disc from your CD-ROM drive while you
are running Expedia Streets unless you are prompted to do so.

Older CD-ROM drives may not be able to access map data at the outermost
edge of the compact disc. This may cause intermittent errors, especially
wrong results or error messages during a find.

The Yellow Pages USA CD-ROM from American Business Information, which is
part of the Streets Deluxe edition, is a special high-density storage disc
and some older CD-ROM drives may have trouble accessing some of the data.

Microsoft Expedia Streets 98, Deluxe Edition

Before trying to export addresses from Yellow Pages USA to Streets, make
sure you run Streets at least once. This will enable Streets to register
itself with the Windows registry. Yellow Pages USA uses the information in
the registry to export to Streets.

If your computer has multiple CD-ROM drives and you are using the Streets
Deluxe edition, please use Yellow Pages USA either via Streets or directly.
Accessing the Yellow Pages USA in both ways at the same time may cause
problems.

Streets will not work with the American Yellow Pages CD-ROM included with
last year's Microsoft Automap Streets Plus, Deluxe Edition.

Pushpins

If your disk drive is almost full, Streets may be unable to create
Pushpins. Free up more hard drive space so Pushpins can be created.

If you paste an object into Microsoft Word 97, then try to copy and
paste it into a Pushpin long note, the object may not paste. Paste the
object directly from the source into the Pushpin, instead of through
Microsoft Word 97. This may also occur when using Text File Import
to import RTF files saved by Microsoft Word 97.

If Pushpins print as black squares, please try the "Print simpler maps"
option. If that doesn't help, contact your video card manufacturer for
an updated display driver. Streets uses the display driver to render maps
before printing. Out-of-date or incompatible display drviers can degrade
print quality.

System Issues

Streets uses your computer's virtual memory. Turning off virtual memory
will cause problems.

A variety of problems can occur when running Streets with less than
24MB of free disk space. Make sure you have at least 24MB of free disk
space before launching Streets.

Hardware issues

Streets will run best with multi CD-ROM changers if you run Streets from
the same drive from which it was installed. Also, if you want to listen to
audio CDs at the same time, it is best to start Streets and then start your
audio CD.

The Sanyo 3-disc CD-ROM driver is not compatible with some 32-bit hard
disk drivers.

To resolve this problem, disable the 32-bit (protected mode) hard-disk
driver. To do so, use the following steps:

Click the Windows Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click the System icon.
Click the Device Manager tab.
Double-click Hard Disk Controllers option.
Double-click the Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller entry.
Remove the check mark from the Device Usage configuration box labeled
"Original Configuration (Current)".
Click OK.
NOTE: If there is more than one IDE drive, repeat steps 5-7 for each.
Restart Windows. Windows will use the standard hard-drive access method
through the computer or the IDE controller card BIOS.

If you have a Microsoft Intellipoint Mouse and useCommand Software's
F-Prot, the Intellipoint Mouse may not work with Streets. Upgrade to the
latest version of F-Prot to resolve this problem.

When running Streets with a Plextor 6PLEX CD-ROM drive, you may see error
messages about failing to read the CD-ROM. You will need to use a different
model of CD-ROM drive.

NT users running Streets 98 on a machine with a Number 9 Imagine 128
Series II video card may experience periodic crashes (blue screen). If this
happens, please download an updated Windows NT video driver from Number 9.

If your computer reports that it cannot find the Streets CD-ROM, and you
are using a CD Audio (Redbook) player on the computer, please confirm that
the MCICDA.DRV file is the same file shipped with Microsoft Windows 95.
There are some third-party MCICDA drivers that can cause problems with
certain applications. To resolve this problem, reinstall the CD Audio
device by using the following steps:

Click the Windows Start button, point to Settings, and then click
Control Panel.
Double-click the Multimedia icon.
Click the Advanced tab.
Click the Media Control Devices button.
Double-click the CD Audio device.
Click Remove.
Close the Multimedia control panel
Double-click the Add New Hardware icon in the control panel.
Choose "No" to search for new hardware.
In the next panel, select Sound, video, and game controllers.
Choose Microsoft MCI.
Choose the CD Audio Device.
Click Install.

Internet Explorer and Internet Features

Streets is designed to work with Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.02 as
installed during Setup. If you are using pre-release or beta versions
of Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, you may experience error messages or
problems displaying information. Please update your pre-release Internet
Explorer 4 to the released version, or remove Internet Explorer 4 and
reinstall Streets to restore Internet Explorer 3.02 on your system.

If your connection to the Internet is via dial-up networking and MSN and
you cancel connecting to a web link, then the rest of the web links in the
product will not work either. Restart Streets in order to use the web
links.
The web links in the product will not work if you are using a 16-bit
browser as your default browser. Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.02 is
installed with the product and can be used as the default browser in many
cases. If you are using a 16-bit browser to access the Internet, please
consider switching to a 32-bit browser such as the provided Internet
Explorer.

If you remove any portion of Internet Explorer from your system, the
product may fail to start, or you may encounter error messages when
attempting to display information. Internet Explorer is required to run
Streets 98. You can reinstall Internet Explorer by re-running the product
setup, or you can go directly to the Streets CD-ROM, browse into the
IE\English folder, then reinstall Internet Explorer by running MSIE302.EXE.

If you have Content Advisor Ratings enabled, you may receive a warning
that the content is not rated. Please disable content advisor ratings while
using Streets, or use the password to override the restriction on the pages
you are warned about.

Improving the Speed of Your Computer

If you have created full-size attachment Pushpins (with pictures, sounds,
or other objects in them) starting Streets will take longer. Deleting any
such Pushpins will improve the product's speed.

If Streets runs slowly, it may not have enough memory available. The
following suggestions may make Streets run faster:

Close all unnecessary applications.
Delete any unnecessary files on your computer, such as files in any
temporary directories or your Internet Explorer cache or history.
Defragment ("clean up") or optimize your hard disk by running a
defragmentation program.
Ensure that your CD-ROM drive is MPC Level 2. Check the documentation
that came with your CD-ROM drive.
Add more RAM to your computer. To run Streets you need at least 8
megabytes.
Optimize the performance of Windows 95. For complete details, consult
your Windows 95 manual.
Windows 95 provides settings for disc caching and for accessing various
CD-ROM drive speeds.

To review and modify these settings, use the following steps:

Select the My Computer icon on your desktop and click it with the right
mouse button.
Choose Properties.
Choose the Performance tab.
Choose the File System button.
Choose the CD-ROM tab. In this box, make sure that the Supplemental
Cache size is set to Large. Also, verify that the Optimize Access
Pattern is correctly set for the type of CD-ROM drive that is installed
on your system (single-speed, double-speed, etc.).

Troubleshooting Printing Problems

Printers differ in their abilities to use fonts, graphics, spacing,
alignment, and character formats. The appearance of your printed document
can vary greatly from printer to printer. The way your document looks
depends on your printer. If you encounter problems when printing from
Streets, such as no printout, low print quality, or erratic text being
printed, there are several ways to troubleshoot or correct the problem.

There is a "Print Simpler Maps" option on the Print Map dialog box. If
you set this option, Streets will print a lower-resolution map, which may
work better on certain printers or in certain memory configurations. The
print quality is still quite good in the lower resolution mode. Even if
your printer supports high-resolution printing, you can use the "Print
Simpler Maps" option to speed up printing.

NOTE: If the printer displays a message or an error indicator, see your
printer manual for information about how to correct the problem.

When a printer will not print at all, the cause is often a simple
mechanical problem; that is, the printer may be off-line, or not connected
to the computer. Please check the following:

Make sure that the printer is plugged in and turned on.
Make sure that the correct port is specified for your printer.
Make sure that you have the correct cable for your printer and that the
cable is connected properly.
In Windows 95, check your printer setup: click Start, Settings, and then
Printers. Verify the printer information displayed.

If Pushpin symbols print out as black squares or "blobs", please try the
Print Simpler Maps option. If that doesn't help, please contact your video
driver card manufacturer for an updated video driver.

If you get out of memory error messages when printing, please check your
Printer settings in Control Panel. Open Control Panel, open Printers, and
right-click on your Printer icon to view the properties. Verify that the
amount of printer memory installed in the printer matches the setting
specified in Control Panel.

Map Display

The Diamond Stealth Pro vidoe driver will sometimes display transparent
road shields.

When switching screen resolutions in Windows 95 or Windows NT (for example,
changing from 640 X 480 to 1024 X 768), Streets may show green blotches or
black areas in its menu and buttons. To resolve this, exit the program and
restart it.

Tips for using Microsoft Expedia Pocket Streets 98

Installing Pocket Streets

To install Pocket Streets on your H/PC, make sure your it is connected
to your desktop computer and that the H/PC Explorer is installed on your
desktop computer. Then follow these steps on your desktop computer:

Put the Streets disc in the CD-ROM drive.
Double-click the HPC directory on the CD.
Double-click SETUP.EXE and follow the online instructions.

Problems During Pocket Streets Setup

Be sure the H/PC Explorer is installed on your desktop computer before
you install Pocket Streets. Otherwise, Pocket Streets Setup won't run and
the Export option won't be available in Streets.

To install Pocket Streets, your H/PC must be connected to your desktop
computer. When you run Pocket Streets Setup, you see a dialog box with the
title "Waiting for Connection" and a Cancel button. If this dialog remains
up for more than 20 seconds, check the connection from your H/PC serial
cable or docking port to your desktop computer. After verifying that the
H/PC is properly connected, you should see a dialog box titled "Now
Connecting H/PC." If this dialog box has not appeared on your desktop
computer screen or if this dialog has already appeared and disappeared,
click anywhere on the blue background of the Setup window using the left
mouse button. The "Waiting for Connection" dialog box should disappear,
and Setup should continue.

If during Setup the connection between your H/PC and desktop computer is
lost, Setup will inform you that the program must be re-installed. When you
re-install, Setup will report that the program has already been installed
and ask if you want to re-install. Click Yes.

If a loss of power, a power surge, or some other unexpected event
interrupts Setup, restart Windows before running Setup again.

Reinstalling Pocket Streets

If you need to reinstall Pocket Streets for some reason, be sure to
uninstall the current version first, and then use Setup to reinstall the
product.

Uninstalling Pocket Streets

To uninstall Pocket Streets, follow these steps on your H/PC:

Tap the Windows CE Start button (lower-left corner of the screen).
Tap Settings.
Double-tap Remove Programs.
Select Microsoft Pocket Streets and tap Remove.
To See Maps on Your H/PC

After running Pocket Streets Setup, you can use Streets 98 to create maps
of any areas in the United States for use on your H/PC. In addition, you
will find sample maps of major metropolitan areas on the Streets CD in the
HPC\Maps directory. Use the H/PC Explorer to copy maps from your desktop
computer to your H/PC. See the Get Streets Wise handbook that came with
Streets for instructions on creating and exporting maps.

You can reduce the time it takes to copy maps to your H/PC by changing
the data transfer rate. In H/PC Explorer Help, click Tips and Tricks and
then click Connection Agent Tips for more information.

Problems Exporting Maps

When you have H/PC Explorer and Streets 98 installed on your desktop
computer, Streets automatically adds an item to its Tools menu called
Export Maps For H/PC. (If you install H/PC Explorer while you are running
Streets, close and reopen Streets to see this menu item.)

If you draw a box around an area that includes someplace outside the
United States, you may see an error message. For best results, your box
should be entirely within United States boundaries.

Pocket Streets performs optimally using maps of 600 KB or less. If the
map you want to export is larger than that, consider exporting two smaller
maps instead. (For example, suppose you want to export a map of Manhattan,
and that map is 1 MB in size. For better performance, try exporting two
500 KB maps, say, of North Manhattan and South Manhattan instead.)

Pushpins and Pushpin Files

If you are unable to view Pushpins that you have already created for or
exported with your map, make sure the Pushpin file (*.psp) is in the same
directory as the map file (*.psm) on your H/PC. Also, make sure that both
the Pushpin file and the map file have the same name (for example,
"Seattle.psm" and "Seattle.psp"), because the files are associated with
each other by name.

When you export a map, any Pushpins that were displayed within the area
you selected will be exported automatically into a Pushpin file. This file
is created at the same time as the map file. You only need to name the map
file; the Pushpin file will automatically be given the same name.

Large Pushpin files may slow the performance of the application. If a
Pushpin file is so large that it requires more program memory than you've
allocated in the system settings, you may not be able to open the map file.
Use the Windows CE System Control Panel to allocate more memory to program
memory, or close unneeded applications, and then try again.

The Pushpin file name extension (.psp) is also used by Adobe Photoshop for
its preferences files.

Copying Maps

If your map doesn't appear to paste successfully into another program, it
may be because you've run out of program memory. Use the Windows CE System
Control Panel to allocate more memory to program memory, or close unneeded
applications, and then try again.

Finding Places

To find McDonald's restaurants or other places that begin with "Mc"
in Pocket Streets, perform a Find Places search and type in "Mc" (without
quotation marks) which will return all McDonald's restaurants and other
places beginning with "Mc."

Using PC Cards

Running Pocket Streets on your H/PC with map files stored on a PC
Card will noticeably slow down how long it takes to pan and
zoom maps. To optimize performance, move the map file from the PC Card to
a folder on your H/PC, and then run Pocket Streets to view the map.

Map files stored on the Streets CD (like all files on a CD) are read-only
files. You are able to copy these maps to your H/PC, and from your H/PC to
a PC Card. But, because they are read-only, you cannot use the Move option
to move them from your H/PC to the PC Card. Instead, use Copy and Delete
to place maps on the PC Card. (Or, on your H/PC, change the read-only
file attribute.)

Tips for using Microsoft GPS Add-on

This document contains additional information concerning the Microsoft GPS
Add-on, some of which is not found in the printed documentation.

If you are running a GPS on a slower machine and are experiencing
problems, set the device so that it is communicating at 4800 baud,
8 bits, parity set to None and 1 stop bit. Set Communication to either
NMEA 0183 V1.5 or V2.0 format. If the device allows, set the frequency
of sending messages to every two seconds.

If a problem occurs while installing multiple Plug and Play GPS
receivers using the Windows 95 Control Panel, exit the Control Panel.
The devices will be automatically installed by the system.

If two devices from the same manufacturer are installed on the same
serial port, the GPS Add-on cannot guarantee that the correct device
will be chosen. To remedy this, we advise you use GPS devices from the
same manufacturer on different serial ports or PC card slots, or have
only one installed at a time.

The following NMEA message combinations have been tested and are known
to produce a location fix (even if the device will not auto-detect in
the Control Panel you should manually detect in this case):

BWC, APA, GLL, VTG (NMEA 0183 V1.5)
RMC, RMB (NMEA 0183 V1.5)
BWC, XTE, GLL, VTG (NMEA 0183 V1.5)
APB, GGA, VTG, BWC, GLL (NMEA 0183 V2.0)

Magellan DLX-10: Press the AUX button and select the NMEA menu. For
best results, select the 0183D option.

Garmin GPS 45: Press the Page button until the menu appears. Select
I/O Setup. On the next screen, select either None/NMEA or NMEA/NMEA.
For the output format, select NMEA 0183 2.0.

Trimble Scoutmaster: If you are using a Trimble Scoutmaster and are
experiencing problems, open the Control Panel and set GPS to use the
Trimble Scoutmaster driver. Using the menus on your GPS device, reset
the Scoutmaster to use default settings.

An NMEA compatible device: Set the device so that it is communicating
at 4800 baud, 8 bits, parity set to None and 1 stop bit. Communication
should be set to either NMEA 0183 V1.5 or V2.0 format. NMEA compatible
devices may not support all features mentioned in the GPS Add-on
section in Help.

The Socket Revision C card installs as a Trimble device under Windows
NT. This installation will not affect the performance of this device.
