SUMMARY

This article describes how to use the Spanish dictionary that ships 
with Microsoft Office, Spanish localized version, version 4.2 with 
Microsoft PowerPoint, version 4.0, included with Microsoft Office, 
English version, versions 4.2x. This article does not apply to the 
stand-alone version of PowerPoint version 4.0, which uses a different 
spelling engine that is incompatible with the Spanish dictionary.

WARNING: Using ResEdit incorrectly can cause serious problems that may 
require you to reinstall the application and/or the Macintosh 
operating system software. Use ResEdit at your own risk.
 
To use the Spanish dictionary with PowerPoint 4.0, you need the 
following:
 
 - Microsoft PowerPoint 4.0 included with Microsoft Office, English
   version, versions 4.2, 4.2.1, 4.2.1a, 4.2.1b 
.
 - Microsoft Office for the Macintosh, Spanish localized version,
   version 4.2.
 
 - ResEdit, a programming utility developed by Apple Computers, Inc.
 
 1. Make a backup copy of the Spanish dictionary.
 
 2. Start ResEdit.
 
    If the Open dialog box appears, click Cancel.
 
 3. On the File menu, click Get File/Folder Info.
 
 4. Locate and select the Spanish Dictionary.
 
 5. Click Get Info.
 
 6. In the "Info for Spanish Dictionary" dialog box, change the Type
    Info from HMSD to CDIC. This is case sensitive, so type it in all
    uppercase.
 
 7. Save and close the file.
 
 8. Make a back up of the PowerPoint Settings (4) file. This
    file is found in the Preferences folder within the active system
    folder.
 
 9. Open the PowerPoint Settings (4) file in ResEdit. To do this:
 
    a. Start ResEdit.
 
    b. On the File menu, click Open.
 
    c. Locate the Preferences folder and select the PowerPoint
       Settings (4) file.
 
    d. Click the Open button.
 
10. Double-click the STR# Resource icon in the PowerPoint Settings (4)
    dialog box.
 
11. Double-click the line for Resource ID 7000, labeled Spelling.
 
12. Change the second string from:
 
       Spelling\1033\Normal
 
    to
 
       Spelling\1034\Normal
 
13. Save and close the PowerPoint Settings (4) file.
 
14. Start PowerPoint 4.0 and create a blank presentation.
 
15. On the Tools menu, click Spelling.
 
16. When PowerPoint asks you to locate the speller, click MS Spelling
    2, and then click Open.
 
    The MS Spelling 2 file is located in the Microsoft folder.
 
17. When PowerPoint asks you to locate the speller dictionary, click
    the Spanish Dictionary, and then click Open.
 
    The Spanish Dictionary file is located in the Microsoft folder.
 
The Spanish dictionary should now be fully operational in PowerPoint 
4.0 for the Macintosh.
