IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry.
Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if
a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring
the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help
topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS
========

When you use the Start GPS option, Microsoft Automap Streets Plus or Trip
Planner may not detect a GPS device on a laptop computer with installed Infrared
(IR) port drivers, or you may receive one of the following error messages:

   Automap could not find a GPS receiver on your system. Check to ensure that
   your receiver is attached properly.

   The Application could not find a GPS on your system. Check to ensure that your
   receiver is attached properly.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this issue, download and install the Irsolver.exe file from the
Microsoft Software Library. This file causes Automap to detect the GPS device.

The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Software
Library:

   Irsolver.exe
   (http://support.microsoft.com/download/support/mslfiles/Irsolver.exe)

Release Date: Apr-22-1997

For more information about downloading files from the Microsoft Software Library,
please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

   Q119591 How to Obtain Microsoft Support Files from Online Services

NOTE: If you are running Microsoft Expedia Streets 98 or Microsoft Expedia Trip
Planner 98, do not install the Irsolver.exe file. Expedia Streets 98 and Expedia
Trip Planner 98 already include the updates included in the Irsolver.exe file.

To install the file, do the following:

1. Download the file, Irsolver.exe.

2. Open the file, and then double-click the file

   Irsolver.reg

3. Restart your computer.

Automap should now detect the GPS device.

MORE INFORMATION
================

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that
problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use
Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and
Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete
Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in
Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If
you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk
(ERD).

You can manually make the changes to the registry to cause Automap Streets Plus
or Trip Planner to find the GPS device. To make the changes, add the following
key to the Windows 95 registry:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\IRLAPFRM.VXD

After you add this key, restart your computer.

NOTE: Expedia Trip Planner 98 and Expedia Streets 98 already contain this
registry key. Do not use this method to resolve this issue in Expedia Trip
Planner 98 or Expedia Streets 98.

To install the GPS add-on to your installation of Automap Streets or Trip
Planner, please refer to the product's documentation or online Help.
