SUMMARY
=======

The following article contains a copy of the contents of the Readme.wri
file in the root directory of the Microsoft Automap Trip Planner compact
disc.

Readme.wri
----------

Tips for using Microsoft Automap Trip Planner
---------------------------------------------

This document contains information that will help you get the most
out of Automap Trip Planner and your system.

To read this file on your screen, use the PAGE DOWN and PAGE UP keys
on your keyboard. You can print the file by choosing the Print command
from the File menu.

Setup Issues
------------

Setting up Automap Trip Planner may take a few moments longer than
other applications, as numerous fonts and other files need to be
installed to optimize your map display. Do not exit out of Setup when
the "Setup is updating your system" message is displayed; this process
will be completed on its own.

Because Automap Trip Planner installs system files that might be
shared with other applications, you should shut down other applications
when running Setup.

If Setup is interrupted by a loss of power, a power surge, or some
other unexpected incident, restart Windows before you run Setup again.

If you have set up Automap Trip Planner using the smaller installation
option and would like to install the "Faster performance" option,
uninstall Automap Trip Planner using the Control Panel Add/Remove
Programs option and then re-install Automap Trip Planner and select
the "Faster performance" option.

CD-ROM Care
-----------

Do not remove the Automap Trip Planner compact disc from your CD-ROM
drive while running Automap Trip Planner unless prompted to do so.

Older CD-ROM drives (Mode 1 drives) may not be able to access map data
at the outermost edge of the compact disc.

Using Automap Trip Planner with Automap Streets Plus
----------------------------------------------------

If you own Automap Streets Plus, you must install Automap Trip
Planner into the same directory to enable interoperability between
the two products.

If you have already installed Automap Trip Planner and then purchase
Automap Streets Plus, be sure to install Automap Streets Plus into the
same directory to ensure interoperability.

If Automap Trip Planner and Automap Streets Plus are installed into
separate directories, the button which enables quick switching between
the two products will not be present.

Classic Drives
--------------

After viewing a Classic Drive, the Route Flags (Start, Via, End) will
be automatically turned off. To turn them back on, select Route Flags
from the Route menu.

Performance Issues
------------------

In order to reduce the duration of route calculations using Automap
Trip Planner:

Select the "Faster performance" Install option during Setup.

   -or-

Select fewer categories of Sights and Activities in the Route Wizard.

If you switch to another program while calculating a route in Automap
Trip Planner, portions of your screen may be momentarily white. It is
not necessary to shut down Automap Trip Planner when this happens; in
a few moments, Automap Trip Planner's regular display will return.

Upgrading from Older Versions of Automap Road Atlas and/or Streets
------------------------------------------------------------------

Do not install Automap Trip Planner into the same directory where the
other versions are installed; this will create problems if you want to
remove older products. Instead, install to the directory suggested
during Setup.

Virtual Memory
--------------

Automap Trip Planner uses your computer's virtual memory. Turning off
virtual memory will cause problems.

Pushpin Issues
--------------

Pushpins created by using the right-mouse menu item called Label Place
can not be found using the Find Places function.

Label-only pushpins will not show up in your itinerary; if you would
like them to show up, change them using Pushpin Properties to either a
long note pushpin or balloon pushpin.

Hardware issues
---------------

Automap Trip Planner will run best with multi CD-ROM changers if you
run Trip Planner from the same drive to which it was installed. Also,
if you want to listen to audio CDs at the same time, it is best to
start Automap Trip Planner and then start your audio CD.

The Sanyo 3-disc CD-ROM driver is not compatible with some 32-bit hard
disk drivers.

To resolve this problem, disable the 32-bit (protected mode) hard-disk
driver:

1. Click the Windows Start button, point to Settings, and then click
   Control Panel.
2. Double-click the System icon.
3. Click the Device Manager tab.
4. Double-click Hard Disk Controllers option.
5. Double-click the Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller entry.
6. Remove the check mark from the Device Usage configuration box
   labeled "Original Configuration (Current)".
7. Click OK.
8. Restart Windows. Windows will use the standard hard-drive access
method through the computer or the IDE controller card BIOS.

NOTE: If there is more than one IDE drive, repeat steps 5-7 for each.

Troubleshooting Printing Problems
---------------------------------

Articles may not print completely under Windows NT 4.0 - use the
copy command from the article's system menu and paste into another
application in order to print the articles.

If you install Encarta 1997 World Atlas after installing Automap Trip
Planner, you may not be able to print some articles. Re-installing
Automap Trip Planner will fix this problem.

Printers differ in their abilities to use fonts, graphics, spacing,
alignment, and character formats. The appearance of your printed
document can vary greatly from printer to printer. The way your
document looks depends on which formats you assign and which formats
your printer can print. If you encounter problems when printing from
Automap Trip Planner, such as no printout, low print quality, or
erratic text being printed, there are several ways to troubleshoot
or correct the problem.

Automap Trip Planner offers four different printing options through
the Print Optimize feature. If you are unhappy with the quality of
your printouts, try the other options, which use different driver
settings in your computer.

NOTE: If the printer displays a message or an error indicator, see
your printer manual for information about how to correct the problem.

When a printer will not print at all, the cause is often a simple
mechanical problem; that is, the printer may be off-line, or not
connected to the computer.
 - Check that the printer is plugged in and turned on.
 - Check that the correct port is specified for your printer.
 - Make sure that you have the correct cable for your printer and that
   the cable is connected properly.
 - In Windows 95, check your printer setup: click Start, Settings, and
then Printers. Verify the printer information displayed.

Map Display
-----------

The Diamond Stealth Pro driver will sometimes display transparent road
shields.

Information about the Microsoft GPS Add-on
------------------------------------------

This document contains additional information concerning the Microsoft
GPS Add-on, some of which is not found in the printed documentation.

If two devices from the same manufacturer are installed on the same
serial port, the GPS Add-on cannot guarantee that the correct device
will be chosen. To remedy this, use GPS devices from the same
manufacturer on different serial ports or PC card slots, or have only
one installed at a time.

The Socket Revision C card installs as a Trimble device in Windows NT.
This will not affect the performance of this device.

NMEA compatible devices may not support all features mentioned as in
the GPS Add-on documentation.

If a problem occurs while installing more than one Plug and Play
device using the GPS Control Panel with Windows 95, exit the Control
Panel. The devices will be installed by the system.
