CAUSE
=====

This problem occurs in Windows 98 when you have a U.S. Robotics ISDN
adapter installed and are using the drivers installed by the U.S. Robotics
Setup software.

NOTE: This behavior has also been reported to occur with the Diamond Supra
NetCommander ISDN modem. If you experience this issue with the NetCommander
or any other modems, please contact your manufacturer for the latest ISDN
modem drivers.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this issue for a U.S. Robotics Sportster ISDN modem, use the
drivers that are provided on the Windows 98 CD-ROM.

To remove the U.S. Robotics drivers and install the Windows 98 drivers,
follow these steps:

1. Uninstall the U.S Robotics Sportster ISDN Manager.

   a. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.

   b. In the Named box, type "usrisdn.inf" (without the quotation marks).

   c. In the Look In list, click the drive that contains your Windows
folder. Make sure that the Include Subfolders check box is selected
      and then click Find Now.

   d. Right-click the Usrisdn.inf file, and then click Rename on the
      shortcut menu.

   e. Type "usrisdn.usr" (without the quotation marks) and then press
      ENTER to rename the file.

   f. Close the Find window.

2. Install the U.S. Robotics drivers from the Windows 98 CD-ROM.

   a. Insert your Windows 98 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

NOTE: If you have auto-run enabled, press ALT+F4 to close the Windows
      98 CD-ROM window.

   b. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click MS-DOS Prompt.

   c. At the command prompt, type the following extract command to
      extract a new Usrisdn.inf file:

      Extract /L c:\windows\inf d:\win98\precopy2.cab usrisdn.inf

NOTE: If your CD-ROM drive uses a drive letter other than drive D or
your Windows folder is located on a drive other than drive C, then
      substitute the appropriate drive letters.

   d. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

   e. Double-click the Network Icon.

   f. On the Configuration tab, click Add.

   g. Double-click Adapter.

   h. Under Manufacturers, click U.S. Robotics and then click Sportster
ISDN 128K (Windows 98 CD-ROM) under Network Adapters.

NOTE: If you do not see the Sportster ISDN 128K (Windows 98 CD-ROM)
listed, then click Cancel. Locate the Drvdata.bin and Drvidx.bin
files, and rename them to Drvdata.old and Drvidx.old. Then, repeat
      steps d-h.

   i. In the Select Network adapters dialog box, click OK. You may need to
wait a few seconds before the driver is added.

   j. In the Network dialog box, click OK.

3. Follow the instructions in the remaining prompts, and make sure to
enter the correct resource settings for the adapter.
