 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a, 4.0c

SYMPTOMS
========

When trying to start PowerPoint 4.0 you receive the following error
message:

   Sorry, PowerPoint cannot get started. You should run PowerPoint setup.

NOTE: This problem does not occur if you are running Windows 95 or
Windows NT.

CAUSE
=====

This error occurs after installing Crosstalk version 3.0. Crosstalk
installs different versions of many of the OLE files that PowerPoint
needs. In particular, Crosstalk updates the file Olesvr.dll to version
1.11. This version of Olesvr.dll is incompatible with PowerPoint 4.0.

RESOLUTION
==========

Replace Olesvr.dll with the version that ships with Windows 3.1/3.11.

The following steps assume that Windows is installed in a folder called
C:\Windows and that you installed Windows from your A: drive.

1. Exit Windows.

2. At the MS-DOS prompt, type the following:

      cd\windows\system <ENTER>
      ren olesvr.dll olesvr.bak <ENTER>

3. Insert the Windows disk that contains the file Olesvr.dl_. If you
   have 3.5 inch disks, this file is usually on Disk 4. If you have
   5.25 inch disks, this file is usually on Disk 5.

4. Type the following:

      expand a:\olesvr.dl_ olesvr.dll <enter>

5. Restart Windows.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Crosstalk also installs the following OLE files:

   File Name       Version   Date
   ------------    -------   --------
   Compobj.dll     2.02      11/18/94
   Ole2.dll        2.02      11/18/94
   Ole2conv.dll    2.01      8/1/96
   Ole2disp.dll    2.02      11/18/94
   Ole2nls.dll     2.02      11/18/94
   Ole2prox.dll    2.01      8/1/96
   Storage.dll     2.01      11/18/94
   Typelib.dll     2.01      8/1/96

These files are also stored in the C:\Windows\System folder.

If you have additional problems using OLE in PowerPoint or other programs
you may wish to replace these files as well using the following steps:

1. Rename the files. You can do this either in Windows or at the
   MS-DOS prompt.

2. With Windows running, insert the PowerPoint 4.0 Viewer disk.

3. In Program Manager, click Run on the File menu.

4. Type the following in the Command Line dialog box and then click
   Open:

      A:\Vsetup

5. Follow the instructions to install the PowerPoint Viewer. This
   setup program also replaces the files listed above.
