SUMMARY
=======

The following article contains a copy of the contents of the README.WRI
file in the root directory of the Automap Streets Plus compact disc.

Tips for using Microsoft Automap Streets Plus

This document contains information that will help you get the most out
of Automap Streets Plus and your system.

To read this file on your screen, use the PAGE DOWN and PAGE UP keys on
your keyboard. You can print the file by choosing the Print command from
the File menu.

Problems During Setup

Setting up Automap Streets Plus may take a few moments longer than other
applications, as numerous fonts and other files need to be installed to
optimize your map display. Do not exit out of Setup when the "Setup is
updating your system" message is displayed; this process will be
completed on its own.

Because Automap Streets Plus installs system files that might be shared
with other applications, you should shut down other applications when
running Setup.

If Setup is interrupted by a loss of power, a power surge, or some other
unexpected incident, restart Windows before you run Setup again.

For information about minimum system requirements, from the Help menu in
Streets Plus, click Search for, and type "minimum system requirements".

FlexiCD and CD Player

If you are running FlexiCD or CD Player, you may encounter an error when
trying to start Automap Streets Plus. To resolve this simply exit from
FlexiCD or CD Player before starting Automap Streets Plus.

CD-ROM Care

Do not remove the Automap Streets Plus compact disc from your CD-ROM
drive while running Automap Streets Plus unless prompted to do so.

Older CD-ROM drives (Mode 1 drives) may not be able to access map data
at the outermost edge of the compact disc.

The ABI American Yellow Pages CD-ROM, which is part of the Automap
Streets Plus Deluxe edition, is a special high-density storage disc and
some older CD-ROM drives may have trouble accessing some of the data.

Upgrading from Automap Road Atlas and/or Streets

Do not install Automap Streets Plus into the same directory where the
other versions are installed; this will create problems if you want to
remove older products. Instead, install to the directory suggested
during Setup.

Automap Streets Plus Deluxe Edition

If your computer has multiple CD-ROM drives and you are using the
Automap Streets Plus Deluxe edition, please access the American Yellow
Pages CD-ROM either via Automap Streets Plus or directly. Accessing the
American Yellow Pages CD in both ways at the same time may cause
problems.

Pushpins

The Help topic which describes the required Latitude/Longitude format
for Text File Import is incorrect. Latitude and longitude values should
not contain a plus sign ("+"). Positive values should be of the form
12.345 and negative values should be of the form -12.345.

In the Text File Import wizard, the number used for altitude is always
interpreted as kilometers.

Pushpin sets' names may not contain the following characters:
/ \ : ? < > |.

In low disk-space conditions, pushpins may not be created. Free up
additional hard-drive space to alleviate this.

Text File Import

If you are importing a text file and placing the records on the map
using "city" for geocoding purposes, use the automatic option rather
than the manual selection process.

If you are importing a text file and placing the records on the map
using "Street address" and "ZIP" code fields, the ZIP codes must be
exact. If you are unsure of the integrity of the ZIP code information,
use only "Street address".

If the text or pushpin file you are importing has more than 64
characters in its name (including its path name), you may experience
inconsistent results. To alleviate this problem, use shorter file names
for importing text or pushpin files.

Virtual Memory

Automap Streets Plus uses your computer's virtual memory. Turning off
virtual memory will cause problems.

Hardware issues

Automap Streets Plus will run best with multi CD-ROM changers if you run
Streets Plus from the same drive to which it was installed. Also, if you
want to listen to audio CDs at the same time, it is best to start
Automap Streets Plus and then start your audio CD.

The Sanyo 3-disc CD-ROM driver is not compatible with some 32-bit hard
disk drivers.

To resolve this problem, disable the 32-bit (protected mode) hard-disk
driver:

1. Click the Windows Start button, point to Settings, and then click
   Control Panel.
2. Double-click the System icon.
3. Click the Device Manager tab.
4. Double-click Hard Disk Controllers option.
5. Double-click the Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller entry.
6. Remove the check mark from the Device Usage configuration box labeled
   "Original Configuration (Current)".
7. Click OK.
NOTE: If there is more than one IDE drive, repeat steps 5-7 for each.
8. Restart Windows. Windows will use the standard hard-drive access
method through the computer or the IDE controller card BIOS.

Online Links and Features

Automap Streets Plus has a number of online links and features.
These are available only to users who have an Internet browser that
is designed for Windows 95 and is entered in the Registry.

Improving the Speed of Your Computer

If you have created full-size attachment pushpins (with pictures,
sounds, or other objects in them) starting Automap Streets Plus will
take longer. Deleting any such pushpins will improve the product's
speed.

If Automap Streets Plus runs slowly, Automap Streets Plus may not
have enough memory available. The following suggestions may make Automap
Streets Plus run faster.

 - Close all unnecessary applications.

 - Delete any unnecessary files on your computer.

 - Defragment ("clean up") or optimize your hard disk by running
   a defragmentation program.

 - Ensure that your CD-ROM drive is MPC Level 2. Check the documentation
that came with your CD-ROM drive.

 - Add more RAM to your computer. To run Automap Streets Plus you need
   at least 8 megabytes.

 - Optimize the performance of Windows 95. For complete details,
   consult your Windows 95 manual.

 - Windows 95 provides settings for disc caching and for accessing
   various CD-ROM drive speeds.

To review and modify these settings:

1. Select the My Computer icon on your desktop and click it with the
   right mouse button.
2. Choose Properties.
3. Choose the Performance tab.
4. Choose the File System button.
5. Choose the CD-ROM tab. In this box, make sure that the Supplemental
Cache size is set to Large. Also, verify that the Optimize Access
Pattern For is correctly set for the type of CD-ROM drive that is
installed on your system (single-speed, double-speed, etc.).

Troubleshooting Printing Problems

Articles may not print completely under Windows NT 4.0 - use the
copy command from the article's system menu and paste into another
application in order to print the articles.

If you install Encarta 1997 World Atlas after installing Automap Streets
Plus, you may not be able to print some articles. Re-installing Automap
Streets Plus will fix this problem.

Printers differ in their abilities to use fonts, graphics, spacing,
alignment, and character formats. The appearance of your printed
document can vary greatly from printer to printer. The way your document
looks depends on which formats you assign and which formats your printer
can print. If you encounter problems when printing from Automap Streets
Plus, such as no printout, low print quality, or erratic text being
printed, there are several ways to troubleshoot or correct the problem.

Automap Streets Plus offers four different printing options through
the Print Optimize feature. If you are unhappy with the quality of your
printouts, try the other options, which use different driver settings
in your computer.

NOTE: If the printer displays a message or an error indicator, see your
printer manual for information about how to correct the problem.

When a printer will not print at all, the cause is often a simple
mechanical problem; that is, the printer may be off-line, or not
connected to the computer.

 - Check that the printer is plugged in and turned on.

 - Check that the correct port is specified for your printer.

 - Make sure that you have the correct cable for your printer and that
   the cable is connected properly.

 - In Windows 95, check your printer setup: click Start, Settings, and
then Printers. Verify the printer information displayed.

Beta Testers of Automap Streets Plus

If you installed a beta or pre-release version of Automap Streets
Plus, delete the pushpins directory in "C:\Program Files\Common Files\
Microsoft Shared\Pushpins" before setting up this version of Automap
Streets Plus.

Changes to Online Help

F7 and F10 are not supported keyboard equivalents in Automap Streets
Plus. Ctrl+H will not display Help.

Map Display

The Diamond Stealth Pro driver will sometimes display transparent road
shields.

Information About Microsoft GPS Add-On

This document contains additional information concerning the Microsoft
GPS Add-on, some of which is not found in the printed documentation.

 - If two devices from the same manufacturer are installed on the same
serial port, the GPS Add-on cannot guarantee that the correct device
will be chosen. To remedy this, use GPS devices from the same
manufacturer on different serial ports or PC card slots, or have only
   one installed at a time.

 - The Socket Revision C card installs as a Trimble device in Microsoft
Windows NT. This will not affect the performance of this device.

 - NMEA compatible devices may not support all features mentioned as in
   the GPS Add-on documentation.

 - If a problem occurs when you are trying to acquire a fix (for
example, no data is found after a long period of time), shut down
the application and use the Initialization Properties option in the
GPS Control Panel to provide a rough latitude, longitude and altitude
through the defined position option. Then restart the application to
   acquire a fix.

 - If a problem occurs while installing more than one Plug and Play
device using the GPS Control Panel with Windows 95, exit the Control
Panel. The devices will be installed by the system.
