SYMPTOMS
========
 
When attempting to open a PowerPoint 7.0 file or a Persuasion 2.1 file
you may receive a message similar to the following:
 
   Sorry, ASLM is not installed or cannot get started. You may not have
   enough memory, or you may need to run PowerPoint setup.
 
   -or-
 
   <Name of File>
   This is not a PowerPoint presentation
 
If you receive one of these messages, click OK. The presentation does not
translate.
 
CAUSE
=====
 
The Shared Library Manager may be missing or damaged.
 
RESOLUTION
==========
 
Reinstall a fresh copy of the Shared Library Manager. If the Shared
Library Manager is already installed, you must remove it and then
reinstall it.
 
PowerPoint 4.0
--------------
 
Reinstall the Persuasion 2.1 translator to obtain the Shared Library
Manager. To do this:
 
 1. Drag the Shared Library Manager out of the Extension folder onto the
    your desktop.
 
    NOTE: Do not remove the Shared Library Manager if the version is
    2.0 or greater. To determine the version, select the Shared Library
    Manager, then click Get Info from the File menu. Shared Library
    Manager 2.x is an integral part of the Open Transport network
    software.
 
 2. Run Microsoft PowerPoint Setup from your original installation disks.
    This should start Maintenance mode setup.
 
 3. Click Add/Remove.
 
 4. From the Installed Components section, on the right hand side, click
    the triangle to the left of Converters, Filters and Translators.
 
 5. Remove the X from the following categories:
 
       Text Converters
       Graphic Import Filters
 
    The following two category boxes should remain marked:
 
       [X] or [-] Converters, Filters and Translators
 
       [X] Presentation Translators
 
    All other boxes should be cleared.
 
 6. Click Continue to remove the translator.
 
 7. Run Microsoft PowerPoint Setup again.
 
 8. Click Add/Remove.
 
 9. On the left side, within the Components Not Yet Installed section,
    click the triangle to the left of Converters, Filters and Translators
    so that it points down.
 
10. Remove the X from the following categories:
 
       Text Converters
       Graphic Import Filters
 
    The following two category boxes should remain marked:
 
       [X] or [-] Converters, Filters and Translators
 
       [X] Presentation Translators
 
    All other boxes should be cleared.
 
11. Click Continue to install the Shared Library Manager.
 
Try to open the file again.
 
Microsoft Office 4.2.x
----------------------
 
Reinstall the Microsoft Office Manager to obtain the Shared Library
Manager. To do this:
 
 1. Drag the Shared Library Manager out of the Extension folder onto your
    desktop.
 
    NOTE: Do not remove the Shared Library Manager if the version is
    2.0 or greater. To determine the version: select the Shared Library
    Manager, then click Get Info from the File menu. Shared Library
    Manager 2.x is an integral part of the Open Transport network
    software.
 
 2. Disable the Microsoft Office Manager:
 
    a. Click Control Panels from the Apple Menu.
 
    b. Double-click the Microsoft Office Manager Control Panel.
 
    c. Remove the X from the Enable Office Manager Menu option. You may
       see a message similar to the following:
 
          This will take effect after the computer is restarted.
          The Office Manager Control Panel can be opened to reenable the
          menu.
 
       Click OK to acknowledge the message.
 
    d. Close the Microsoft Office Manager control panel and restart your
       Macintosh.
 
 3. Run Microsoft Office Setup from your original product disks, or the
    shared network location from which you originally installed. This
    should start the installation maintenance program.
 
 4. Click Add/Remove. Setup then builds a list of maintenance options.
 
 5. From the Installed Components section, located on the right hand side,
    check the box to the left of the following component:
 
       Microsoft Office Manager
 
 6. Click Continue to remove the Microsoft Office Manager.
 
 7. After the removal is done, you may see a dialog box with a message
    similar to the following:
 
       During your installation, Setup replaced or attempted to
       remove one or more files that were 'in use' and therefore
       couldn't be directly overwritten or deleted.
 
       These files have been moved to the Trash, and can be
       inspected or deleted at your convenience after the system
       restarts.
 
    Click OK.
 
 8. Restart your Macintosh and then empty the trash.
 
 9. Run Microsoft Office Setup again.
 
10. Click the Add/Remove button.
 
11. On the left side, within the Components Not Yet Installed section,
    check the box to the left of the following component:
 
       Microsoft Office Manager
 
    Click Continue to install the Shared Library Manger.
 
12. After the installation, restart your Macintosh.
 
Attempt to open the file again.
