The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Macintosh, version 4.0
--------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When launching a presentation created by Microsoft PowerPoint 4.0 for
the Macintosh that contains objects which have been subscribed to, a
network connection dialog box may appear with the following message:

   Connect to shared disk "<name of share>" as:

This may happen even if you are attempting to open the presentation on
a machine not connected to a network.

CAUSE
=====

The subscribed objects within the presentation look to a server location
for the editions. If you are unable to connect to the shared disk and click
cancel, the network connection dialog re-appears for every subscribed item.
For example, if you have 7 subscribed items within the presentation you
must cancel the network connection dialog 7 times before the presentation
opens.

RESOLUTION
==========

There are two methods to work around this issue. Pick the method that best
suits your needs. Please read the description of each method before
proceeding. These methods involve breaking the links to the publisher. Be
sure to make a back-up of your presentation before implementing any of
these methods.

Method 1: Convert the Subscribed Object to a Picture
----------------------------------------------------

NOTE: This process breaks the link to the publisher.

1. Select the subscribed object on the slide.

2. Click Cut from the Edit menu.

3. On the Edit menu, click Paste Special...

4. Click Picture from the Paste As list, then click OK.

5. Repeat steps 1-4 for every subscribed object.

6. Save the file. The presentation is no longer dependent on the server.

Method 2: Cancel the Subscriber
-------------------------------

NOTE: This process breaks the link to the publisher. This process assumes
you are able to access the edition located on the network.

1. Launch the Presentation.

2. Connect to the shared disk. Depending on the permissions of your server,
   you may be able to log on as guest; otherwise enter your user name and
   password.

3. Select the subscribed object on the slide.

4. On the Edit menu, click Subscriber Options...

5. Click the Cancel Subscriber button.

6. You should then see a message that says:

      Are you sure you want to remove this subscriber?

   Click Yes.

   NOTE: If the object looks strange, force the computer to redraw the
   slide. On the File menu click Page Setup..., then click OK.

7. Repeat steps 1-6 for every subscribed object.

8. Save the file; the presentation is no longer dependent on the server.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Until the links are severed, do not delete the editions on the server.
If the editions are missing, canceling the subscriber may be impossible.
