The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Macintosh, version 4.0
----------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

After double-clicking on a file in the Finder, you may receive a message
similar to the following:

   Could not find the application program, PowerPoint PowerMac Stub

The file you are attempting to open may not even be a PowerPoint file.

CAUSE
=====

This message usually appears if your Desktop file is damaged or has been
rebuilt incorrectly.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this problem you must rebuild the desktop. However, a typical
rebuild of the desktop file may not resolve this issue. Instead, use the
following steps to rebuild the desktop file. These Steps assume you are
using System 7.5.x and have an Extensions Manager utility on your system.

Rebuild the Desktop
-------------------

1. Disable all extensions and control panels, except Macintosh Easy Open,
   in the Extensions Manager control panel. Macintosh Easy Open is the
   control responsible for rebuilding the desktop file.

2. Restart the computer while holding down the OPTION and COMMAND keys.
   This brings up a dialog box that asks you if you are sure you want to
   rebuild the desktop file. Click OK.

4. Once the desktop has been rebuilt, open the Extensions Manager control
   panel and restore your normal extension manager set.

For information on rebuilding the desktop and Macintosh Easy Open, please
contact Apple Technical Support at (800) SOS-APPL (767-2775).

MORE INFORMATION
================

When you double-click a file on your Macintosh, the finder looks into the
desktop file to find out which application created the file. When the
finder locates the creator of the file, it then launches that application.
With this issue the desktop file incorrectly reports that the creator
application is the PowerPoint PowerMac Stub.
