 - Microsoft Windows Printing System version 1.0

SYMPTOMS
========

When you try to print a test page after installing the Windows Printing
System (WPS) in Windows 95, you may receive one of the following error
messages after you restart the computer:

 - The Windows Printing System printer requires newer software to work
   with Windows 95. Contact Windows Printing System for updates to your
   host software.

 - There was an error writing to LPTx: for printer (Windows Printing
   System): There was a problem printing to the port. Check to make sure
   your printer is configured to use a valid port. This printer will be
   set to work offline. To save your print job in the local printer
   queue, click OK.

CAUSE
=====

This problem can occur when you configure WPS to print to a network
printer if the printer port for the WPS printer has not been permanently
captured.

RESOLUTION
==========

Permanently capture the printer port for the WPS printer. To do so, follow
these steps:

1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Printers.

2. Use the right mouse button to click the WPS printer, and then click
   Properties on the menu that appears.

3. Click the Details tab, and then click Capture Printer Port.

4. In the Device box, click the printer port for the WPS printer.

5. In the Path box, type the network path for the network printer. Use a
   Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path. For example:

      \\<ServerName>\<PrinterShare>

6. Click the Reconnect At Logon check box to select it. This permanently
   captures the port.

MORE INFORMATION
================

By default, WPS prints to a captured, or redirected, printer port. When
you install WPS, you are prompted to capture a port if you are printing to
a network printer. You can avoid the problem by clicking the Reconnect At
Logon check box when you originally capture the port.

NOTE: It is also possible to print to a network printer using the UNC name
for the printer instead of a captured port. Doing so can increase printing
speed, but may not be reliable in some situations.
