The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for the Macintosh, version 4.0
 - Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1
--------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

When you import clip art from Microsoft Word 6.0 to Microsoft PowerPoint
4.0 for the Macintosh, you may not be able to print the clip art images.

CAUSE
=====

Word clip art images (Bear Market, Bird, Bull Market, and so on) are PICT
graphics that contain PostScript hints for the printer. Some printer
drivers have difficulty interpreting this type of graphic.

RESOLUTION
==========

To work around this problem, use any of the following methods.

Method 1: Try Printing with the LaserWriter Print Driver
--------------------------------------------------------

Use the LaserWriter 7.1.2 or 7.2 printer driver. To do this:

1. Click Chooser on the Apple menu.

2. Click the LaserWriter printer driver icon.

3. Click Background Printing Off, and then close the Chooser. You should
see a message similar to the following:

You have changed your current printer. Please choose "Page Setup" in
      all of the open programs.

4. Click OK.

5. Switch to PowerPoint.

6. Click Page Setup on the File menu. Check your settings and then click
OK. The PowerPoint slide will then redraw.

7. If you are planning to print using Color/Grayscale, make sure this
option is selected. The LaserWriter 7.x default setting is Black &
White. To change the printer driver setting to Color/Grayscale:

      a. On the File menu, click Print.

      b. Click the Option button.

      c. Click Color/Grayscale.

You should now be able to print the image.

Method 2: Ungroup the ClipArt
-----------------------------

Use the following steps to ungroup the clip art:

1. Click the clip art image to select it. You should see eight handles
   surrounding the image.

2. On the Draw menu, click Ungroup. You should see one of the following
   messages:

This picture contains some PostScript, which will be lost. Convert
      anyway?

      -or-

      Convert picture to PowerPoint objects?

3. Click OK to convert the image.

You should now be able to print the image.

Method 3: Save the Graphic using a Photo Editing Program
--------------------------------------------------------

Open the graphic with a photo editing program and re-save the graphic.
(NOTE: The instructions given here assume you are using PhotoShop. Other
photo editing programs have similar capabilities.)

1. Open the PICT image.

2. On the File menu, click Save As.

3. Select the PICT file format and save the image.

NOTE: Because PhotoShop rasterizes the image (that is, it converts the
image to a bitmap), all vector information will be lost.

4. Insert the picture into PowerPoint. You should now be able to print the
   image.
