Alerter Takes Several Hours to Retrieve Rows

Article ID: Q153552

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Systems Management Server versions 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2
----------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

Creating a large site-limiting query may cause the alerter to take several
hours to monitor the query for a specific condition.

CAUSE
=====

There is an issue in CQueryExec where site-limiting a query with no format
columns adds a table to the query without performing a join, therefore
returning the cartesian product of the Identification_SPEC table and the
distinct list of MachineIDs. Although RetrieveResultRow() only returns one
row per machine ID, the mere act of getting the distinct list takes
much longer than expected, especially if there is a lot of dataloader
traffic.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Systems Management Server
version 1.1. This problem has been corrected in Systems Management Server
version 1.2.
