SUMMARY
=======

Here is how to troubleshoot tablet installations on SGI platforms.

The Softimage tablet drivers on the Softimage 3D, Softimage Eddie, and
Softimage Toonz CD-ROMs support all Wacom and Hitachi tablets. These
tablet drivers are supported for the current and previous versions of
your Softimage software. Platforms and Operating System versions should
be the same as specified for your Softimage software.

Troubleshooting Steps:

The following steps confirm the correct set-up of the files used to run
your tablet:

1. Check the port number to which your tablet is connected.

2. If your tablet is connected to port 1, confirm that the setting for
t1 in /etc/inittab is set to "off" and the correct port number is
indicated at the end of the line.

If your tablet is connected to port 2, check the same for t2 in
/etc/inittab.

3. See if permissions are correctly set on the port you are using:
ls -al /dev/ttyd1 (permissions should be rw- for all).

4. Has a binary driver ".o" file (ie: wacom.o) been created in
/var/sysgen/boot ? If not, you will have to rerun the tablet install
programme.

5. There should be no more than one wacom ".o" in /var/sysgen/boot using
the port used by your Softimage driver.

You can check your documentation (either in the reference manual or a
README file in the tablet directory of your CD-ROM) to confirm the name
of the file your tablet install programme creates.

If you have more than one driver, you can:

 - delete the other ".o" file(s), if they are not used by another
software package;

 - set either driver to the other port (using the tablet install
programme); or

 - rename the driver without the .o extension so that it will not be
read as a driver: mv <filename.o> hidden _driver

6. Is there a wacom file in /usr/lib/X11/input/config ? If not,
reinstall the driver.

7. Ensure a line has been added to /var/sysgen/system/gfx.sm that says
USE : wacom If not, add this line at the bottom of the file.

8. Check that the dip switches on the tablet are properly set.

9. See if all software-specific variables are properly entered (see the
list below).

10. Is your cable the right type and functional? You'll have to speak
with your Wacom dealer to confirm these details.

11. Remember to power up your tablet before turning on your SGI.

In the event that your tablet is still not running after following all
of these steps, you may want to try a tablet installation programme from
another Softimage CD-ROM that you have previously (and successfully)
used (either Softimage 3D, Softimage Eddie, or Softimage Toonz), or you
may want to obtain a driver directly from Wacom [(360)750-8882;
(800)922-9348; www.wacom.com].

Users with valid Softimage Support Contracts should not hesitate to
contact Softimage for assistance at any time.

Software-Specific Variables:

Softimage Eddie: setenv EDDIETABLET <driver_name> in .eddie
Softimage Toonz: (none)
Softimage 3D: setenv SI_WACOM /dev/ttyd<port_number> in .softimage

Configuring Your Tablet:

Configuration settings for your tablet are in a file called either wacom
or tablet (depending on your driver) in
/usr/lib/X11/input/config/usr/lib/X11/input/config

Documentation on the variables to be configured will be in the README
file in this directory. You will have to log in to your account for
changes to these variables to take effect.
