The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft PowerPoint for Macintosh, version 4.0
 - Microsoft Word for Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1
--------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

If you copy text in Word and then switch to outline view in PowerPoint, you
may notice the following behavior:

 - Characters you have typed take longer than usual to be displayed.

 - Some characters you have typed are ignored and never appear on the
   screen.

This behavior does not occur when you are working in Slide view.

CAUSE
=====

The process of transferring text from the System clipboard to PowerPoint's
internal clipboard may cause typing to be slow in outline view.

RESOLUTION
==========

Flush PowerPoint's internal clipboard. Use the following steps only when
you are experiencing the slow typing behavior:

1. When in PowerPoint, highlight a single character to select it.

2. On the Edit menu, click Copy.

   This action flushes the text from PowerPoint's internal clipboard and
   places the character you selected there.

The computer's response to your typing should now return to normal.

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in
Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition.

MORE INFORMATION
================

When you copy text in Word, that text is stored in Word's internal
clipboard. If the text were not moved from Word's internal clipboard
to the System's clipboard, only Word would have access to this text.
To make this text available to other applications, some clipboard
transferring must take place. So, when you switch from Word to PowerPoint,
the copied text is transferred to the System clipboard and from there
to PowerPoint's internal clipboard.

NOTE: Even though the above example uses text, this behavior may also apply
to numbers or graphics.
