The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Works for the Macintosh, versions 4.0, 4.0a, and 4.0b
----------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

Date or Time formats may seem incorrect when inserted into word processing
documents or when the Date or Time token is used to generate current dates
or times.

CAUSE
=====

This behavior can occur for either of the following reasons:

 - The system date or time is incorrect or is set to use the wrong format.

 - The preferences file is damaged.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this issue, try these steps:

 1. On the Apple menu, click Control Panel.

 2. Double-click Date & Time.

 3. Change the date or time format (whichever is incorrect) to the
    correct format. Verify that the date and time is correct.

 4. Check to see if the problem is resolved.

    NOTE: You should insert the date or time field in the document again
    to verify that the format is correct. If you do not, you must close
    the document and then open it again to verify the format. You must
    quit and then restart Works before a change in the actual date or
    time will be evident.

 5. If the date or time still seems incorrect, continue with the
    remaining steps.

 6. Quit Works.

 7. On the desktop, open the hard disk.

 8. Open the System folder.

 9. Open the Preferences folder.

10. Drag the "Works 4.0 Preferences" file to the Trash.

11. Empty the Trash. A new preferences file is created automatically
    when you start Works.

MORE INFORMATION
================

If the system time is consistently incorrect (even after you change it),
try zapping the PRAM. For information about zapping the PRAM, please see
the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

   ARTICLE-ID:   Q52156
   TITLE : How to "Zap" the Parameters (PRAM) of a Macintosh

You may also want to check to make sure the battery in your computer is not
failing and in need of replacement.
