IPv6 prototype for Solaris 2.5 and 2.5.1, release 5.3
IPv6 for Solaris is brought to you by the Internet Engineering Group
at Sun Microsystems. IPv6 for Solaris is
an ongoing development effort. As part of this effort we are making prototype release
of our product available to the general Internet community for the purposes of evaluation
and experimentation.
Getting the release:
To load IPv6 for Solaris you will need to be running Solaris 2.5 or 2.5.1 ,
with no patches installed. To install the release:
- If version 1.0 or 2.0 of the IPv6 prototype is installed on the system, remove it
using the "setup_ipv6" that came with it. If version 3.0 or greater is installed, remove
it with "pkgrm SUNWipv6". NOTE: YOU MUST REMOVE THE OLD PACAKGE BEFORE ADDING THE NEW RELEASE. You may want to keep a copy of /etc/rc2.d/S70ipv6 ipv6 startup script before removing the old package.
- Download the release to /var/spool/pkg. The package is availble by anonymous ftp at
our ftp site. To download sparc package click on Sparc. To download the x86 package, click on
x86.
- Uncompress the tar file if necessary, the command is "uncompress ipv6_5.3_tar.Z"
- Untar the release file, the typical command is "tar -xvf ipv6_5.3_tar". The file
should be untarred in the /var/spool/pkg.
- Run "pkgadd SUNWipv6". This installs the release on the system.
- Run "/usr/ipv6/etc/conf_ipv6" to configure IPv6 interfaces and daemons the system.
A version of snoop which parses IPv6 packets is included in the release but is also available
separately. This IPv6 version of snoop is suitable for those who just want to watch IPv6 packets
without loading the rest of the prototype.
- Click on Sparc. to download the sparc version of snoop.
- Click on x86.
to download the x86 version of snoop.

Our test machines
Currently we have two IPv6 test machines on the Internet with the following V4 compatible
addresses ::192.9.5.6 and ::192.9.5.7
Services available on ::192.9.5.6 are:
- Ping, and the builtin inetd commands: echo, discard, daytime, chargen, daytime
- Anonymous ftp. We mirrored our standard ftp site, playground.sun.com, onto this
IPv6 server.
- An HTTP server. Again this is a mirror of the HTTP server on playground.sun.com
which includes the IPng home page. To contact this server using the IPv6 protocol, you
will need a browser modified for IPv6. We include a modified Mosaic in our release. If
you would like the source code for porting please send a a request via email.
The address of the second machine is ::192.9.5.7. Its test address on the 6bone is
5f00:bd00:c009:500:0:800:2072:6fe5.
Supported features for release 5.3:
See our release notes for specifics on what files are contained
