Adding a Junction

You might need to add a junction to the cluster configuration for one of the following reasons:

To add a junction, complete the following steps:

Recommended Step Recommended step. Ensure that your junction is physically connected before you add it to your configuration.

SunPlexTM Manager enables you to add a junction to the cluster configuration without physically attaching a junction to your cluster. If the junction is configured and not present, the cluster framework tries to use the junction and records error messages when its attempts fail.

  1. From the navigation frame in SunPlex Manager, choose either Transports or Junctions.

    The Transports window appears.

  2. From the Action Menu, choose Add Junction.

A task window appears. This window prompts you to provide additional information.

  3. Type the name of the junction.

  4. Click Add Transport Junction.

SunPlex Manager displays a confirmation message, including the command that is used to complete the task. Write down or copy this command for future use in scripts and other automated tasks.

When the junction has been added to the configuration, the junction is displayed in the Junction Properties table as "Disabled". Enable the junction by using one of these methods:

Removing a Junction

You need to remove the junction when you upgrade the junction.

Warning By performing this task, you permanently remove the selected junction from the cluster transport configuration.

Ensure that the junction is redundant. Also, ensure that the junction cannot isolate one or more nodes from the cluster. Disabling the last junction renders the cluster inoperable.

To remove a junction, complete the following steps:

  1. From the navigation frame in SunPlex Manager, choose either Transports or Junctions:

    The Transports window appears.

  2. If you have not already, remove the cable that is connected to the junction.

When a cable is disabled, the two endpoints of the cable remain configured. An adapter cannot be removed if that adapter is still in use as an endpoint for a transport cable. Removing a Cable describes how to remove a cable.

  3. From the Action Menu, choose Remove Junction.

A task window appears. This window prompts you to provide additional information.

  4. Choose the junction to be removed.

  5. Click Remove Transport Junction.

SunPlex Manager displays a confirmation message, including the command that is used to complete the task. Write down or copy this command for future use in scripts and other automated tasks.

  6. Physically remove the junction.

"Installing and Maintaining Cluster Interconnect Hardware" in the Sun Cluster 3.1 Hardware Administration Manual describes how to physically remove a cluster transport junction.

Replacing a Junction

You need to replace a junction if your junction fails. You can replace a junction in one of two ways:

To replace a junction, complete the following steps:

  1. Disable the junction.
  2. Replace the cable, as described in the Sun Cluster 3.1 Hardware Administration Manual.
  3. Enable the junction.

Enabling a Junction

To bring a replacement junction online, you need to enable the junction. You need to complete this task only when the junction is disabled. Enabling a junction is the last task to replace a junction.

To enable a junction, complete the following steps:

  1. From the navigation frame in SunPlex Manager, choose either Transports or Junctions.

    The Transports window appears.

  2. From the Action Menu, choose Enable Junction.

A task window appears. This window prompts you to provide additional information.

  3. Choose the junction to be enabled.

  4. Click Enable Transport Junction.

SunPlex Manager displays a confirmation message, including the command that is used to complete the task. Write down or copy this command for future use in scripts and other automated tasks.

Disabling a Junction

When a junction fails, disable the junction before replacing it. By disabling the cable, you prevent numerous error messages.

Note: SCI hardware cannot be disabled. To replace SCI hardware, you need to remove and add the junction.

Warning By performing this task you disable the selected junction, preventing the nodes that are connected to it from using the switch for transport communication.

SunPlex Manager does not disable the last junction that connects a node to the cluster. Disabling the last junction renders the cluster node inoperable.

To disable a junction, complete the following steps:

  1. From the navigation frame in SunPlex Manager, choose either Transports or Junctions:

    The Transports window appears.

  2. From the Action Menu, choose Disable Junction.

A task window appears. This window prompts you to provide additional information.

  3. Choose the junction to be disabled.

  4. Click Disable Transport Junction.

SunPlex Manager displays a confirmation message, including the command that is used to complete the task. Write down or copy this command for future use in scripts and other automated tasks.

  5. Physically remove the junction.

"Installing and Maintaining Cluster Interconnect Hardware" in the Sun Cluster 3.1 Hardware Administration Manual describes how to physically remove a cluster transport junction.

  6. Enable the replacement junction.
