Hello folks, this is a binary distribution of the latest and greatest Perl 5.002gamma. Perl is available from CPAN (Comprehensive Perl Archive Network). The nearest site here in Germany is ftp://ftp.rz.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/pub/programming/languages/perl/CPAN See the manpage perlmod(1) for more info. I think in the meantime perl 5.002 has been officially release, but I don't expect, that is significantly different from this gamma version. Executing perl -v reports: ------------------------ This is perl, version 5.002 gamma Copyright 1987-1996, Larry Wall Perl may be copied only under the terms of either the Artistic License or the GNU General Public License, which may be found in the Perl 5.0 source kit. ------------------------- Perl was build under SINIX-P V5.42A10 with the CDS 1.1 C compiler. Therefore this binary should work on any SINIX system with a version 5.42 or later. Simply follow the instructions in the INSTALL file. Essentially a './Configure -des -Dprefix="/home/tools"' did it for me. During the build process, when the POSIX extension is build, manual intervention is necessary. Simply replace '-lm_s' in ext/POSIX/Makefile with '-lm'. All regressions tests except one passed. This test also failed on earlier versions. This never caused any problems for me. ------------------------- .... .... comp/cpp........8090.c 22: [fatal]: 1060 Include file 'Comp.cpp.inc' ca nnot be opened [error]: 9025 /bin/cc : frontend error while compiling file '.8090.c' Can't find string terminator "END" anywhere before EOF at .8090.c line 13. FAILED on test 0 .... .... Failed 1 test, 98.89% okay. u=0.99 s=2.92 cu=27.87 cs=29.76 files=89 tests=1926 ------------------------- The whole package was build with "/home/tools" as the root directory. Therefore all files, which are dynamically loaded, are searched relative to this path. Therefore you should execute the following steps: cd /home mkdir tools cd tools gzip -dc perl5.002gamma-rm.bin.tar.gz | tar xvf - Now you have to extend your shell search path with "/home/tools/bin". If you install the package into a different location, you have to either set the environment variables according to the documentation or create a symbolic link from the installation directory to "/home/tools". For example, if you usually install your stuff under "/usr/local/" in subdirectories like "bin", "lib" and "include", you should make the following steps: cd /usr/local gzip -dc perl5.002gamma-rm.bin.tar.gz | tar xvf - cd /home ln -s /usr/local tools Now, if you execute "ls -l /home/tools/lib/perl5", you should see a bunch of files with a ".pl" extension. The manual pages can viewed online through a WWW browser under the URL http://utensil.pdb.sni.de/man-pages I'm also going to put a Postscript file of all manual pages there inclusive a permuted index. Here you can also read about some other interesting stuff. If you start perl and get an error message, that it can not find libperl.so.2, you have to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to the directory where libperl.so.2 is located. For example like this: LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib/perl5/RM600-svr4/5.002/CORE export LD_LIBRARY_PATH Mail me (ridderbusch.pad@sni.de) if you have any problem. Oh, I nearly forgot. This perl version has three non standard extension build in. It is build with MSQL support. MSQL is a mini SQL database application. Mail me, if you want to know details. And it contains an extension to access the Postgres95 (Version 1.0) database though perl. And last but not least, it is build with the GD-1.00 interface from Lincoln Stein, which interface to the gd1.2 library from Thomas Boutell, which allow to draw GIF pictures on the fly. This is particular useful for WWW applications. -- MfG/Regards Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG /==== Abt.: LoB MR PD 254 / Ridderbusch / , Heinz Nixdorf Ring / /./ 33106 Paderborn, Germany /=== /,== ,===/ /,==, // Tel.: (49) 05251-8-15211 / // / / // / / \ NERV: ridderbusch.pad / / `==/\ / / / \ Email: ridderbusch.pad@sni.de
