Guidance on exporting MIDI files from AMPLE 0.30
================================================

1. Always set a new tempo after READY, and specify the duration of the beat:

"RUN"[READY 48, 84=T ...]

The duration value 48 goes into the MIDI file header as the standard crotchet
duration.

2. If you change tempo later on in the piece, use the same duration as used
when the tempo was first set; i.e. don't do this:

48, 84=T
...
60, 96=T

This will work in AMPLE, but for exported MIDI files you will find that the
second tempo change will not give you the correct tempo. This is because the
crotchet duration is stored only once in MIDI files (in the file header) and
cannot be changed later.

3. Do not step backwards in time (using negative DURATION or \) since MIDI
files do not support this.

4. Always set a bar length and use barlines if at all possible. This will
help notation editors to get it right. AMPLE always defaults to crotchet time
signatures (4/4, 3/4 etc).

5. Use key signatures, if applicable, for the same reason. MIDI files cannot
deal with non-standard key signatures so AMPLE will automatically choose the
"best-fit" key signature to put into the MIDI file.

6. Endless pieces are not a good idea. It is possible to stop the export by
clicking on the STOP button, but since MIDI file export takes place at a much
higher speed than playback, you will find that you generate very large MIDI
files.

7. Be careful about using highly complex rhythms or irregular durations.
Playback of MIDI files containing such things is perfectly normal, but
notation editors will either get confused or will quantise your rhythms out
of existence.

8. It is possible to write AMPLE programs that will accept input (from the
keyboard, for example) and influence the playback depending on the nature of
the input data. It is important to remember that MIDI files do not have this
ability, so when a MIDI file is created it will simply play back the results
without asking for input.

9. Remove any AUTOSTART commands from the AMPLE program before compilation,
since AUTOSTART will start playing the piece immediately after compilation,
and will not export it. Other commands have no effect on MIDI file export.
