Task 1
------

READ the following notes :

- motte and bailey castles were quickly replaced by
  stone ones.

- stone castles usuaully had a tower or KEEP at
  their centre. This was the strongest part of
  the castle.

- no two stone castles are alike. They make use
  local features. e.g. being built on a hill;
  using a river at one side for protection.

- over the years, as warfare changed, the design
  of castles changed.
  e.g. square towers were replaced by round ones.
       Round towers were more difficult to MINE
       and missiles glanced of their sides.

- in the 13th century, King Edward I wanted to 
  control Wales. He built a number of expensive
  and very strong castles.

In your own words, DESCRIBE the castle defences.

IMAGINE that you are planning an attack upon this 
castle.

DESCRIBE the problems you would face.

This is Dover castle in Kent.

It stands on the cliffs above Dover harbour.

DRAW a sketch plan of the castle, listing the
different defences.

This is Caerphilly Castle in Wales.

WHY do you think the castle was built on this spot ?

EXAMINE the file CASTL2.

This is a view of Caerphilly Castle from the air.

COMPARE it to file CSTL1.

Which of the two files gives a better understanding
of why the castle is built where it is ?
