Task 1
------

READ the following description :

"William crossed the sea from Normandy and landed
at Pevensey, where he built a strongly defended
castle.

Leaving a group of knights there, he rode to
Hastings where he quickly built another one."

WRITTEN BY WILLIAM OF JUMIEGES, A NORMAN MONK.

"The Normans landed at Pevensey and built a
castle within the walls of the old Roman Fort
there.

The next day they marched to Hastings and built
a castle there.

After his victory at the Battle of Hastings,
William marched to Dover, where he built his
third castle.

William then marched in the direction of
London. He asked Harold's supporters in
the city to surrender. They would not.

William then marched to the north of London
and pillaged and burnt the countryside.

Harold's supporters surrendered.

William marched into London and was crowned
king on Christmas day.

In 1067 William ordered work to start on
rebuilding the castle in London in stone.

In March, William returned to Normandy to
celebrate his victory."
